So what if we go for the reverse of the amnesia trope, something like ‘hallucinating a good life’ trope! In the usual setting, Ed left to be a fisherman, Izzy kept being Stede’s first mate and s2 went AU before Prince Ricky could mess things up.
So Izzy has been ill for a few days now and the fever just doesn’t go down, no matter what Roach tries, so they are sailing as fast as they can to the nearest island to get some medicine there before it gets worse.
With the rest of the crew busy with the ship, Stede has been by Izzy’s side a lot, reading to him, changing the cold compress on his head as often as needed and trying to make him drink some water or eat something when he is at least half-lucid, but the man has been unconscious for quite some time now and Stede is getting very worried.
And, meanwhile, Izzy in his feverish state is having the most realistic dreams of his life, and they are a bit crazy because in those dreams Stede and he are together and they are… happy, which should be weird, but his brain is half-fried so he is only a bit confused at first, but then he simply enjoys it.
Because Izzy keeps seeing Stede by his side, smiling at him softly and it feels so good. Sometimes he is reading Izzy something from a book, some other times he is offering him fine drinks and food and even though Izzy tries to resist (because he has never wanted or needed posh food, thank you very much), he always caves because Stede keeps begging him so sweetly.
They hold hands at the helm sometimes and they kiss under the moonlight and at some point (it’s all a blur, Izzy can’t tell when exactly, but he doesn’t care) Stede is offering him a ring, almost shyly, and Izzy doesn’t even have to think about it before saying yes and the crew organizes a big celebration for them on the Revenge.
That last dream gets a bit blurry around the edges as the fever starts to finally go down, and when Izzy stirs and finally opens his eyes, he sees Stede smiling brightly at him. Then, as a very relieved Stede leans down to plump up his pillows, Izzy pulls him down by his shirt and kisses him clumsily on the lips.
Stede gasps and straightens up, staring at the soft smile on Izzy face. He looks exhausted and still half-asleep and so happy. But then his smile falters and he frowns.
And then it’s time for Stede to panic and worry about what to say and what to do with the fact that his heart has clearly skipped a beat when Izzy has kissed him.
