ASSAD ZAMAN The Vampire Lestat: After Dark | THE DEVIL'S ROAD
SINNERS (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler
who: adeola & open
where: the devils cask
the cask had been quiet and while adeola lived for the lively nature that could come with running a tavern, she was certainly glad for the moments of quiet, too. moments of quiet reflection were hardly sought just about coming to the end of contentment with it ... when the door opened. she raised an eyebrow as she saw who it was that walked in. " don't want any funny business " adeola narrowed her eyes at the newcomer. " so if you're in some sort of mood, turn around and take yourself elsewhere. " it was a warning and adeola wasn't someone who would give chances. if the person in front of her decided not to heed that warning... well, they'd know what was coming to them. " otherwise - welcome. what can i get you? "
hair a mess, flung over her shoulder in a haphazard braid. her cheeks are flushed, her eyes alight with something alive, something she likely uses to ignore the general wilderness that is her mind. sansa pushes into the devil’s cask with a thirst crawling its way up her throat. her grin is sharp as a knife as she eyes adeola, an appreciation in her gaze as she wanders towards the bar and sits herself down on the adjacent stool with a puff of air escaping from her pink lips. it’s been a while since she’s stepped foot inside of the establishment, but it feels like home. “i’m always in a mood, though.” she scoffs, voice like gravel. she feels light, without an anchor of her own dragging her by her feet into the darkness which stalks at her ankles. “what do you recommend? i trust your judgement.”
an eyebrow quirked at the others retort. well, she could hardly blame the woman. everyone in tortuga seemed to be in some sort of a mood. perhaps it was the island living - it was hard to escape your ghosts on a place so small, after all. " the gin. " adeola nodded and set to sorting the drink for the younger woman. " if it's appropriate for the royal guards, it's appropriate for you. " that was the story the smuggler had told her when she had been given the gin, anyway. adeola didn't particularly care where the alcohol came from, as long as she actually had enough to stock the bar. she had people that needed the comfort a glass could bring to someone at the end of the day.
swaggering to a seat at the bar that was all but reserved for him — in fact it had been known for it to be vacated the moment he entered the devil's cask — dorian dropped onto the stool with all the grace of a cat landing on its feet. "oh don't scold me already, amor. you know it only excites me." a wry grin spread across his lips as he pointed behind the bar to the bottle of gin that had been 'politely commandeered' from a british trading ship by smugglers. "by your tone i'd say you've been dealing with trouble. is it handled?" an offer to help, but also an insight into the goings-on of other establishments in port.
having familiar people in the tavern was adeolas favourite thing - even if she pretended otherwise with a roll of her eyes as dorian took her seat. she had already been on her way to sort out his gin when he pointed across to it. " your attempt at flirting will not help you in here, dorian. you know it doesn't work on me. " she teased. she had never been one to fall for the easy flirt. that would never interest her. " i can handle myself. you know better than most, that i can. "

"not in a mood." it is a simmering hot day in tortuga, and bastian varga would like the mercy of a mast’s shadow shifting with the quick water ; but beholden to someone else's routine he is, enduring the habits of a mark that apparently likes nothing more than to eat. had they the necessity, to venture into the same place every day?
a scanning glance travels slow around the empty tavern, his voice following with the same procedural lilt. "no funny business."
bastian takes the seat opposite adeola, as he had before, where the tarnished mirror over her shoulder holds just enough of the room. "i promise to be profoundly uneventful, should you have a bowl of fish stew."
adeola nodded as bastian confirmed that he wasn't here to cause any trouble. a part of her wasn't sure that she totally believed him... though maybe that was more because she knew better than to trust pirates completely. unless they were her pirate.
" soup i can do. " adeola nodded. she quickly busied herself and pulled together a bowl of soup, a little bit of bread and some ale. she knew her customers well enough by now. the ones who came in often, adeola liked to ensure that she knew what they wanted before they could ask her. it was part of her job, she thought. it was important to pay attention to the little things.
once her hands were empty, adeola placed them on her hips and tilted her head slightly. " so what is it that you're here for? " she may not have any interest in piracy for herself but she couldn't help but be curious about their goings on. she was only human, after all.
where: adeola's home, the slats when: very early morning with: @stexdfxsthexrt (adeola okafor)
The first rays of watery sunlight have begun to creep across the floor of Adeola's bedroom, carrying with them the mournful knells from the church on the hill, an unwelcome reminder that it is already five o'clock. Jane, duty-bound, has been moving quietly about the room for the last fifteen minutes, pulling on her clothes and mentally preparing herself for what is always the worst part of any morning she spends ashore.
Smoothing her hands over her coat and deeming herself presentable, Jane finally allows herself to turn and look at the woman she's left tangled in the sheets behind her, her lovely face so dear and untroubled in sleep. It would be cruel to wake her. It would be crueller still to leave without saying goodbye.
She carefully picks her way back over to the bed, the wooden slats beneath her feet knowing better than to announce her, and, in a whisper of fabric, bends down to leave a kiss on Adeola's soft cheek. "It's time I took my leave," Jane murmurs, regret colouring her tone even as she straightens again, knowing it will take all her resolve to carry her safely back onto the street, "Sleep well, my darling."
adeola never slept better than when jane was by her side. if it was because she felt safer with the other beside her or because it simply made her house feel more like a home - it didn't matter. the only thing that mattered was being in her arms, being close to her. the sleep that came to her was simply so deep.
so deep that she did not hear as jane slipped out of the bed or started to get ready for the day ahead. she didn't feel the sun on her face. she didn't stir ... not until jane she felt janes lips across her cheek.
adeolas eyes flickered open as she heard janes words. it took a moment for her to realise what was said. for a moment, she basked in the sight of the woman in front of her. adeola would never tire of the sight of waking up to her ... but then she took in the uniform and the fact that the light was peaking through the window. she reached her hand out to jane, " do you have to go now? " she sighed as she pulled her closer a little, " stay with me. just a little while longer? "
who: open to anybody (0/4) where: outside sawbone
afternoons in tortuga were always quite hot. it didn't help matters that nya had to go bring their supplies in, because she wasn't going to wait for someone else to do it, not when they needed it badly. she was struggling to lift with her small form but she was determent to it anyway, knowing she had at least two more trips to make. just when she was at the treshhold of sawbone, the box broke and all that was contained inside fell to the floor. "oh no." she said frustratingly and ran inside to find an empty box to fit the things inside, only when she got outside someone was already picking the things up. "that's not for stealing." she said, half joking.
he had heard the slight commotion before he had seen it. as he rounded the corner to sawbone, however, it became pretty clear what had happened. the supplies across the floor could only really belong to one place. he was, however, unsure where nya or one of the others had gone so he bent to start collecting up the things. he didn't want them to fall into the wrong hands, after all. he chuckled as he heard the others voice, " honestly, nya, do you think so little of me? " he glanced down to his arms full of supplies and then back up to her. " or would you prefer i drop these where i stand for you to do all the hard work yourself? "
Open starter (for anyone) where: Dead man’s bluff, at the high stakes table
Laughter rolled through the Bluff like distant thunder, weaving itself between the scent of aged rum and the endless tide of patrons drifting from table to table. It was a night like any other, though there was a hint of something darker just for a beat as the final coin clinked to the center of the table in the far right corner. It was one of the evenings Rue found herself at the head of the table, dealing instead of hosting an eager crowd. Quite a few patrons had flocked to the occasion to try and see if they were luckier this evening than Lady Luck. She no longer recalled how many had sat across from her, only the thrill, the rush. - Ruolan had long abandoned the regular dealer seat and instead lounged atop the edge of the table itself, all languid grace and quiet confidence, like a black cat basking in the attention of a room that knew better than to look away The scarlet silk of her garment caught the lanternlight like spilled blood. It was just moments after the cards had already been cleared. The man across from her slumped in disbelief, pockets turned out, soul more than halfway sold.
“And there it is,” amusement laced her words when she spoke, “the last deal of the night for me. The house thanks you… for your generosity.” A sly smil graced her features, or perhaps more of a a half-mad gleam. With a lazy tilt of her head, Rue flicked two fingers toward the shadows. It was a silent signal for a fresh dealer to step in.
Like clockwork, the new dealer held out his hand to assist her graceful assent, while another swept in to gather the spoils. Her eyes, dark and knowing, swept the room once more, daring someone to stop her. Dare them to tempt her with yet a more interesting offering than coin alone.
the dead mans bluff was not an uncommon place for someone to find khalid. when he was on dry land, it felt like a safe space. a place away from his troubles - although it was probably the opposite. he was most certainly not safe there and he only ever seemed to go away with more troubles...and yet he continued to go back. time and time again. it was a compulsion, it felt like. perhaps he needed to look into that but khalid was not one for self reflection very often.
that night, however, was different. he found himself captivated by the beauty as she dealt the cards. the quiet confidence that she possessed was captivating to khalid. he had seen her before, of course. she had been one reason as to why he had lost so much money over the years. still, he could hardly hold a grudge.
as she finished with her game, khalid pushed himself away from the wall - where he had been leaning to watch - and covered the short distance to her. " you have a way with the cards. if i didn't know any better, i would assume it was some sort of witchcraft. " ghost stories and stories of witches and sirens were common among the pirates but khalid didn't believe in such things. he was much too logical - despite being somewhat of a ghost himself.
who: rika & open! where: deserter's docks
each whispering lap of the gentle waves against the shore was a vicious mockery. rika sat under the dock, dagger restlessly turning in her hands, as she watched the light of the moon catching the far horizon. the sea was calm that night, a far cry from the turmoil brewing inside of her. she wanted to scream, to curse the waves and the snares that awaited any pirate that dared to enter them, and tear this entire port to the ground with her savage bare hands. if there was one thing rika had no patience for it was... well, patience. keen ears picked up the soft shifting of sand underfoot behind her, and she scowled all the more, her gaze still fixed ahead. "clearly i look like i want to be disturbed." she growled, sarcasm dripping from every word. "fuck off."
it's funny. one might think that living on an island would make one grow little tired of the sea and the beach. that was never the case for adeola. the docks were the place that she returned, time and time again, when she needed a moment alone. a place of quiet reflection that made everything feel like it was going to be okay. a place that made her feel connected to the very earth that they lived on. she held her shoes in her hand as she stepped foot on the sand and only sighed a sigh of annoyance as she heard the other. she had intended to give rika a wide berth. " then it is a good job that i am not here for you. " adeola responded simply. she had long since stopped being intimidated by the likes of rika. " the only one doing any disturbing around here is you. "

[ wunmi mosaku, cis female, thirty seven, she/her ] is that tortuga’s very own ADEOLA OKAFOR ? the BARKEEPER at THE DEVILS CASK has been around the island for HER ENTIRE LIFE, and they remind us of THE LAUGHTER AFTER A FEW DRINKS, THE SMASHING OF GLASS AFTER ONE TOO MANY, ALWAYS BUSYING YOURSELF WITH SOMETHING TO KEEP THE MEMORIES FROM COMING BACK. people say they’re MATTER OF FACT & GENEROUS but we’ve heard they can be QUICK TEMPERED & OBSESSIVE too. rumour would have it that they have a POSITIVE view on pirates, but one thing’s for sure—they’d better get used to them. / [ pinterest ]
[ assad zaman, cis male, thirty-three, he/him ] for the crimes of piracy KHALID CHATTERJEE / THE SILENCE is hereby wanted. those who surrender them dead or alive to the crown will receive ONE HUNDRED pounds. they’re famously known to be part of the WIDOWS WAKE as their MIRROR. before engaging be warned as they can be DEVIOUS & VINDICTIVE, but if you’re lucky they’ll be OBSERVANT & METICULOUS. legends say that when you speak their name you’re reminded of NEVER JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER, MESSY HAIR AND ASKEW GLASSES, THE SILENCE AFTER THE KILL. / [ pinterest ]
