Sexism in the dance industry
Feminism has blown up recently, especially in the world of electronic music and the techno scene. A recent short documentary posted by Smirnoff Sound Collective aimed to create awareness of this sexism within the industry by following the all-female DJ collective and booking agency, ‘DiscWoman’. In the documentary they brought up facts such as: 10.8% of major festival lineups in 2015 consisted of women, which yes, is an awful statistic. They claimed that the dance industry was not as free and open as you may think. I agree with the fact that there should be a brighter spotlight on female DJs, it is terrible that these women feel that they are being misrepresented HOWEVER I believe that women such as Nina Kraviz and Shanti Celeste (new tune “Being” is sick btw) and Annie Mac (all HUGE names) are showing how equal the DJ game is. Yes there may be less female artists at the major dance festivals however, the DJs who have worked and worked and succeeded through years of trying, are being given the representation they deserve. The DJ industry is extremely hard to break into and you can’t expect to be given your opportunity purely because you are female.
What’s your view?
