Let’s say during the movie they were at most, juniors or in their second to last year. (Same thing, shhh)
The school year took place 1959-1960 meaning Meeks would graduate in ‘61 at what, age 17? Giving him a 3 year grace period to go to college/university without even needing to worry about the draft.
While not officially confirmed canon, we find most of the DPS fandom assigning his major as something akin to engineering, so let’s do the same.
That meant it was considered “vital” to national security interests that our brilliant student finished his undergraduate studies safely. He would have graduated around ‘67 at 21-ish if he followed a 4 year program but oh no, there’s 6 years of the draft left!
No worries, Meeks attended Welton Academy indicative that his family has the ka-ching! Mulah to put him through a graduate program so he could get a master’s in engineering, that could take between 2-3 years.
To keep on theme with our boy genius, he got his MA in two years. in 1969 at the age of 23 he’s graduated again. F o u r y e a r s of the draft left! Boo, hiss, gross, nooo. (aside: since it was 1969 he totally watched the moon landing and probably hosted a party but that’s a different fic altogether.)
Now, our Meeks is a smart lil cinnamon roll (and HC that he’s a conscientious objector) so of course he’s always been in the top half of his classes (duh), he’s considered vital to national security and hell, why not go for a PhD in engineering?! A degree that can take 5 - 7 business days years. Because our boy is wicked smart we know he was out in five, no problem!
Meeks was 28 years old when he graduated with his PhD in engineering in 1976. He remained on American soil throughout the duration of the Vietnam War, was n e v e r drafted and, while I have nothing but respect and admiration for Allelon Ruggiero, I will not I repeat, I WILL N O T accept ANYTHING ELSE.
