There is a Buddhist practice in which one imagines giving joy and the source of all joy to other people, thereby removing all their suffering. Though of course we cannot change their situation, I do feel that in some cases, through a genuine sense of caring and compassion, through our sharing in their plight, our attitude can help alleviate their suffering, if only mentally. However, the main point of this practice is to increase our inner strength and courage.

I have chosen a few lines that I feel would be acceptable to people of all faiths, and even to those with no spiritual belief. When reading these lines, if you are a religious practitioner, you can reflect upon the divine form that you worship. Then, while reciting these verses, make the commitment to enhance your spiritual values. If you are not religious, you can reflect upon the fact that, fundamentally, all beings are equal to you in their wish for happiness and their desire to overcome suffering. Recognizing this, you make a pledge to develop a good heart. It is most important that we have a warm heart. As long as we are part of human society, it is very important to be a kind, warm-hearted person.

May the poor find wealth, Those weak with sorrow find joy. May the forlorn find new hope, Constant happiness and prosperity.

May the frightened cease to be afraid, And those bound be free. May the weak find power, And may their hearts join in friendship.

Working on the weekend.

I am at the Iowa Memorial Union parking ramp right now. A lot of people have vouchers from staying at the hotel in the IMU, and they usually hand me the entrance ticket and voucher at the same time. Sometimes they'll say "Here you go!" or nothing at all. Two cars in a row just handed me the entrance ticket and voucher separately while saying "Here's this, annnnd... this!" Deja vous occurring immediately after the event. That doesn't happen very often. I wonder if they were related.

I realized something just now.

I used to be best friends with this girl from 7th grade through sophomore year of college, more or less. We had this huge falling out, and kind of tried to be friends again a couple of years later. It was so awkward because she was simply over it and I wasn't. I still wanted to tell her what was going on in my life and for her to share with me and I became so frustrated and sad with her and I could NOT let it go. For years! In this moment, I realized that I am totally over it. And I have been for something like half a year. We Skyped a couple of times when I was in Italy last spring and I got all excited that we were becoming friends again. That following summer, I learned she was coming back to Iowa for a visit and had contacted a bunch of people wanting to see them, including my younger brother. She didn't contact me, though, surprise, surprise... Not gonna lie, I was a little heartbroken. But then something happened, and I just forgot about her. And I haven't thought about her or our broken friendship for months. It's finally happened. I'm finally there! Ahh, what a relief to have grown up and moved on. Way to go, Steph.
