Weekly Anime Comic: Macross - FINALE!
...aaaaaaaaand we're done! With a comic that's admittedly more about the entirety of the Macross franchise as a whole than the final episode specifically, but I've had this one kicking around in my head for a while now, and just needed to get it out there.
Because yeah, when I was was first getting into Macross proper, I was under the impression that the whole "They went out into space and nobody know where they wound up" bit was solely for Robotech. Ya know, just there to explain why no Macross characters were appearing during the Southern Cross or Mospaeda episodes. But no! Turns out it's actual official Macross canon that Misa leads humanity's first expedition into space with Hikaru and Minmay in tow... and then the ship vanishes. After everything these characters go through, their official fate is to be gobbled up by space and have their disappearance covered up by the authorities. It's an... ODD choice, made odder by so many of the choices the rest of the franchise would make afterwards.
And before anybody brings it up: No, I haven't seen Macross Delta yet but I do know that this is SORT OF addressed in that series. However, I'm also led to understand that they still leave a lot of stuff rather vague and cryptic, in which case my point still stands. I know anime loves to to be inconclusive and open ended, but I feel like it can border on being disrespectful to the characters at times, and that's really weird in a franchise that still wants to milk them in other ways. Like, it's just odd to see one of the later shows have a reference to Minmay for the nostalgia pop when I know what context is lurking in the background. On the other hand, though, being lost in space meant that none of these characters had to be in Macross 7. Maybe I'm wrong about who's getting disrespected here...
BUT ANYWAY, this may be the end of the Macross comics, but Dirty Pair comics have already been going up on Patreon for weeks, as have comics about Gunbuster, and Digimon Tamers stuff will be starting up before too long! And becoming a patron for even just $1 a month would get you in on all of this stuff the second it goes live!
