Hart Plaza is a city plaza along the Detroit River. It is located on the site at which French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac landed on July 23, 1701 when he founded Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit. The 14-acre plaza, which is named for the late U.S. Senator Philip Hart, opened in 1975. At the center of the plaza is the Dodge Memorial Fountain. Pylon is the stainless steel spire sculpture positioned near the entrance and Transcending is the arch sculpture located west of the entrance. And for all you non-Detroiter, Journey fans still paying attention, that's Windsor on the other side of the river. (at Carat)

The Purple Gang, also known as the Sugar House Gang, was a mob of bootleggers and hijackers. They operated out of this building (which shares a wall with our building) in the late 1920's. They reigned supreme over the Detroit underworld, controlling the city's vice, gambling, liquor and drug trade. They also ran the local wire service, providing horse racing information to local horse race betting parlors and handbooks.
