fear confirmed ... eddie had known as soon as his body stopped careening down the muddy embankment on the far side of i - 105 that his ankle has sustained significant injury. his head - over - boots slip must've looked as bad as his body felt ----- while he was lying in a thick pool of dark, grassy sludge at the bottom, face just inches away from the blistering hot pavement, eddie heard the victim they'd just pulled from an overturned honda civic shout:

hey! are you okay?! hey! hey! one of you guys just rolled down the hill!

eddie had shouted back reassurances despite the sudden, gnawing pain in his boot. the subsequent response he received was bright laughter, mostly from chim.

"i had a feeling it was more than just a sprain. i can't put any weight on it."

the half gram of fentanyl ----- which is the most that eddie would allow for himself ----- that dr. hawkins pushed wasn't taking much of the edge off.

"i'm on the last six of my twenty four, so i guess you could call that finishing out my shift. my captain had me hop in back of the meat - wagon with our patient and my partner chimney. i was actually able to write most of the narrative for chim's report while he ran a line on our guy, spare him a little bit of a headache."

"i've had worse, doc," eddie said through half - grit teeth, shifting his wet, muddy body higher up the stryker bed — sharp pain bolted up the side of his calf from his broken talocrural joint. "shit ... much, much worse."

understatement of the century. his body had been a warzone since his second deployment ---------- since guerilla insurgents shot the uh-60 black hawk he and his squadron were flying through the korangal valley in out of the sky. ugly burn scars were kept hidden by cotton and faded blue denim and shame; every time eddie caught a glimpse of the battleground of his flesh, the burn scars and old, healed - over bullet wounds and the faint pink reminders of the many corrective surgeries he's had, it left a flashbulb image of the mangled, blood - and - fuel soaked corpses of his friends' ----- the friends he'd crawled over out of that smoldering helo wreckage ----- seared into his mind, hot and bright and nauseatingly vivid.

"the county got underbid again last month. big shock, right? our new boots are horrible. there’s almost no tread, and the steel - toe comes halfway up your damn foot. i'm not the first to take a fall because of these, and i'm sure i won't be the last."
