starspunstranger:
Perhaps luckily for Rhodo, the tree didn’t hold anything other that what he’d claimed. The QuickJump Interface and trivial cloaking technology that masked the true appearance but little else.
This next section of forest was denser, with more lowdown plants in between the trunks. Rhodo was waiting patiently, now quite comfortable with leaving his hologram still and stiff looking while he waited inside.
“Good. You are good? It didnot hurt?” He asked cheerfully, then then quickly moved on without giving her time to answer. He walked through the underbrush, not bothering to stop the leaves from occasionally clipping through the taller parts of the projection.
It was not a long walk, maybe five hundred metres further in when he stopped very suddenly beside a high bank. Again he did something secret inside his hologram, and then turned towards her to smile. “This ismy ship.” He announced. “It will wantto scan you whenyou come in, so please staystill.” There was a slight thump, and then a section of the earthy bank wall moved and slid away inside itself, revealing a pastel-green passageway. Rhodo stepped in and gestured for her to follow.
Checking her cuff to make sure it wasn’t damaged in the teleportation, as well as ensuring the trackers on it were still functional, Quincentalia followed her companion through the rest of the forest. She observed quietly as he disabled parts of his hologram.
Even she had to admit, his ship was decently concealed– any human wouldn’t be the wiser if they had happened to stumble this far out into the wilderness. She stepped up to the passageway, standing still to allow the ship to scan her. “This will not interfere with my own technology, correct?”
He looked up at the ceiling of the corridor, which was only about two inches from the top of his hologram’s head. “No. I donot think it will. It isonly identifying you. For the records. It ismaking sure you donot need special... needs. The atmostphere and air insidehere is based onmy home world. Notearth.”
The ship beeped, and then a warm voice spoke *Nuvu am fuogi, Touml Chius! Aviyo umuj id teelu am id chauy.*
“You pass. It said welcome in. Come in.” He translated loosely, turned, and padded inside himself. He left her to follow him, trusting that she would, especially now that the door was sliding shut again.
The corridor led into a larger room, which seemed to have several storage racks, shelves and cupboards. The walls were made of something soft and plush, padded. There were some human jackets hung on hooks, and a collection of what could have been weapons or tools sitting in pouches on some of the shelves.
Rhodo walked up to one open rack, which had two small spikes sticking up, and reached two small furry black hands out of his holograms midriff. There were glowing metal bracelets on his wrists, which attached themselves magnetically to the spikes, unlocked with a hiss and released the small alien from their grip.
The hologram vanished, leaving the short, fluffy black creature to turn and grin up at her with a wide frog-like mouth, enormous green eyes and near foot-long ears pricked up in happy alertness. The fur was shorter on his limbs and chest, and very long over his head and back, and he had a second pair of tiny arms folded close on his chest.
“You canturn yours off now, ifyou want to.”
