I am so tired of people taking the "Estinien can't be trusted with money/gets scammed all the time" at face value. The person who tells us this is Tataru, who is an Ul'dahn with financial trauma of her own that she brings to this opinion.

6.1 made it very clear where Estinien's "bad at money" comes from. It's because he is himself a peasant who was poor, who now has more money than he frankly can reasonably expect to spend in his lifetime due to his retirement from the Most Dangerous Job in all of Ishgard's military. He chooses to be "bad at money," giving it to the less fortunate by way of never haggling and overpaying people who are fighting to survive. He explicitly says this about the treasure map - he says that he hopes the small fortune he payed the scammy merchant makes its way into the boy who was helping with the scam, because the kid needs it. This is also why he massively overpays for his hairband, the first business that merchant had probably seen in weeks given the situation in Thavnair at the start of EW due to the tower.

This is precisely opposite to Tataru's reaction to her past of financial trauma, which turned her into an Ultimate Haggler who saves every potential penny she can. Of course a guy who has actively chosen to never think about money looks like he has no sense of money to Tataru, who is well established as the coinkeeper who hates letting any extra change slip through her fingers.

It's great characterization for both of them. But 90% of the playerbase has not actually added two and two to get four that Estinien is doing this with intent and takes Tataru's words as gospel rather than the view of an unreliable narrator with her own biases on this specific issue. And I swear I am going to beat every single one of them in the ass with a ladle about it.
