Ahh, Lucanis. So let me first say, his scenes make total sense and I'm happy with what we got - we all want more from our faves, but they did manage to compact a lot of trauma and resolution in some fairly compact quests. Here's what I think happened that wasn't made explicitly clear though:
Lucanis chooses the pantry to sleep in because he's been imprisoned and tortured for a year, and he's not ready to leave captivity yet, not inside his head. He locks himself in there because it's familiar misery to him, which is easier to deal with than scary freedom.
Lucanis' letter to Rook before he asks Emmrich to bring Zara back for questioning tells us he's suicidal at that point, and probably has been for a while. Spite, however, doesn't see him as a lost cause - he never uses that to take over Lucanis' body entirely. This is so interesting to me, when we know things like that pretty famously happen all the time in Thedas. He's determined to keep Lucanis alive - and he asks for Rook's help in doing so.
We are in the NORTH now BABY! Attitudes towards spirits and demons are different here, especially in Rivain, and it seems with our Rook too, who never expresses any chantry-esque hang ups (that I've seen). Seer Rowan greets Spite as Determination, and that's how he's introduced by Isabela (with some excitement) if you fight in the hall of Valor. What happened to Spite is just as sad as what happened to Lucanis. He was violated, perhaps corrupted, and definitely trapped - and hurts Lucanis sometimes in his frustration. But, I think he likes Lucanis! He's his host's little head gremlin, and I think the relationship they have (that we don't see too much of) is healthier than any of the possessed individuals we've seen before.
Because? Lucanis is not a spiteful person. He wants revenge, yes, and he's angry, but he doesn't hurt everyone around him because he's in pain. One of the first things he does when he becomes part of the team is go shopping for them. And despite how Ilario and Caterina have hurt him - and you can argue all day whether he's right to be like this - he still cares for them.
I think that when we help Lucanis leave the prison inside his head, we are helping Spite to return to his original nature as Determination just a little more. We're determined to help our friend, and you know what? Spite is too. For himself, firstly, because Lucanis's pain is hurting him, but in the end, he's done it for Lucanis too. There's an argument there that Determination didn't get corrupted at all - just hurt, and that Lucanis, with his loving nature, has been keeping him from turning into a mindless demon of pain.
I thought for a long time that when Lucanis breaks away from kissing Rook, it was because Spite said something horrible to him. But actually, I think it was Lucanis himself, remembering how trapped he is. Thinking about the eventuality of killing himself - I strongly suspect that's what he was thinking about before he fell asleep, and that's why Spite was trying to go walkabout - trying to get out from where Lucanis can't. Lucanis got lost in the moment, but of course he doesn't want to drag Rook into that.
Lucanis making dessert for Rook and thinking that's the same as asking them out (but not actually asking them out) is so completely on brand for him I laughed. He has no idea what he's doing. It would have been nice, though, for Rook to reply to one of the companion's 'so you're together?' banters with... 'we are?' Or for Rook to be able to ask him. Unfortunately, we don't get those convos where we can spam ask questions etc like in DA:I - I did wonder if that got cut and we missed some resolution to that.
Lucanis gives no shits about everyone knowing he's Rook's love interest. He's not ashamed of himself or scared he'll hurt them - Rook has helped both him and Spite. And judging by the way Spite's wings come out to embrace Rook as they kiss Lucanis, I suspect that Spite might love them, too.
Ok, but imagine Teia, who knows, despite all his charm and romanticism, that Lucanis has always been more focused on work then love. She like Rook, she sees Rook makes Lucanis happy. So she pulls him aside and is like do you know what to do? do you understand how to truly make her scream. My friends all deserve wonderful organisms do you know how to make that happen? and poor Lucanis is just so overwhelmed by her directness.
Does anyone have the dialogue for coffee with the crows if you fell Lucanis you like tea? I need it, itâs the only one I donât have and I canât find it posted online! Thank you
I am officially obsessed with Lucanis, so here is a random Meandering fic with some Back story of my Warden Rook and some start of long slow burning pining
Lucanis headed across the courtyard to the dining room and kitchen. Mia had told him to look around and find a place that made him comfortable. She was not sure how the lighthouse worked but it seemed to make a place for each of them, and she had hoped it would do the same thing for new members.Â
Harding and Neve had just joined her inside the main area, âso how is the new recruit?â Never sat on the couch next to Rook.Â
âRook has a crushâ Bellara giggled outÂ
âWhat? No. I.. fine, he is handsome and seems brave and I had a surprising reaction to seeing him but I wouldnât say crushâ
Harding raised an eyebrow at her while Neve chuckled. âSounds like a crush to meâÂ
Rook sighed â It does not matter, because he is not going to like me, and we have way more important things to worry about then if the demon possessed assassin is hot.âÂ
âWaitâ Hardings smile dropped âdid you say demon possessed?âÂ
âThe stories of the mage killer did not mention he was also a mage?â Neve looked annoyed she has missed somethingÂ
âHeâs notâ Bellara answeredÂ
âRight,â Rook leaned forward, â the Venatori did something to force the demon into him. They were doing it to others, and they would turn and with the blood the Venitori kept of the victims they could bind the demons to their will. But Lucanis didnât turn, him and the demon I guess made some sort of deal. He has not been overly forthcoming with details of what he went through down thereâÂ
Harding was not hiding her concern from her face âBut is he dangerous?â
âHe is definitely dangerous, but not because of the demon, and I donât think heâs a danger to us. Bellara, you know that sense when someone is about to turn, the rush of the fade breaking down, I never felt that around himâÂ
âI didnât eitherâÂ
âIâll trust you to on this for now, but I would like to talk to him myselfâÂ
Rook looked over at Never, effortlessly beautiful and elegant and felt a pain of jealousy at her beauty then guilt for even thinking it. None of it really mattered âIt would be weird if you didnât talk to him since he is on the team. Now I need a bath and th get this Venatori blood off my armorÂ
âIâm with Rook, I need to clean up, and maybe napâ Bellara stood with Rook and with a nod the two walked off to clean up.Â
Harding and Neve sat for a bit each processing the new information.Â
âHey,â Harding looked up. âDid you hear the part where she said he wouldnât like her anyway?âÂ
Neve smiled âyes, never imagined Rook lacking confidence.âÂ
âGuess we found he weak point, romanceâ Harding chuckled, I do remember Varric asking her about it once, she stated she was fairly inexperiencedâÂ
âWell once we have a chance to confirm this demon of Vyrantium is not dangerous to us, we can help her through it.âÂ
It was late, and Rooks stomach was growling; she had never truly adjusted to how much she needed to eat as a warden. She was also looking for an excuse to go talk to Lucanis, she wanted to give him time to settle in, but also he fascinated her and her draw to him was confusing and thrilling, She was mildly surprised to see Bellara and Never sitting there, talking to Lucanis as he starting to the fire.Â
âWhat are we talking about?âÂ
âSpite, the Demon inside me and how to get rid of itâÂ
âIâve heard of killing the Demon in the fade can get rid of itâ Never leaned forward âbut it doesnât always workâÂ
âItâs hard, and dangerous, the Demon is at its most powerful in fade, I almost died last time I did itâÂ
The three of them all looked at her âWhat? Yes Iâve done it before, and it almost killed me and the person I released was still too damaged. I was able to heal them physically, but their mind was brokenâÂ
Bellara looked down at her hands âThere is another wayâÂ
âYou would have to kill meâ Lucanis was looking right at her, like he was looking to see what she would see
âThat can not be the only way, You have a different relationship here, can we not reason with SpiteâÂ
âTalk doesnât work on spiteâÂ
Lucanis suddenly jerked his head, his eyes closed then suddenly his nose started to bleedÂ
âLucanisâ They all jumped upÂ
âNo, No, I am fineâ His hand upÂ
His now was forceful enough, But she wanted so desperately to help him âHe hurt you? Why?âÂ
âHe is throwing a tantrum because he did not get his wayâÂ
âHeâs done this before, you should not be used to itâÂ
âItâs ok, once you all leave he will calm downâÂ
âAre you sure you should be alone right now?â she thought she saw a hint of a smileÂ
âI will be ok RookâÂ
The others started to leave, but Rook could not help but turn back âIâm not sure how much you got to look around, but there is some bread and cheese, I need to get more supplies, but also a tea mix, it was my mother special blend, it works wonders on headachesâÂ
The next morning, Rook walked to the dining hall in hope of finding something for breakfast. It looked as though someone had made a porridge and there was some Jam left to put in it. Bellara was sitting at the table, absentmindedly stirring her food. Lucans stood with pen and paper going through all the cabinets occasionally grumbling under his breath and writing things down.Â
âGood morningâ Mia filled her bowl and went and sat next to BellaraÂ
âGood Morning Rookâ Lucanis did not look up from his list âyou were not kidding about needing suppliesâÂ
âI found a good amount of gold in Calivans office. We can use it to bulk up.âÂ
Bellara looked up âI was hoping you would get yourself those boots you like so much in Dock Town.âÂ
âI donât need new boots, we do need food, besides if we use the money to get food, I still have the rest in case one of you needs something important.âÂ
âLike that frog sculpture you bought me?âÂ
âYesâ Rook smiled at her. âYou deserve something nice to make the lighthouse feel more like homeâÂ
âAnd you deserve boots that donât look like the stains are holding them together.âÂ
Rook rolled her eyes. âThey keep my toes warm and dry, they achieve all I need of them. They are just well broken in.âÂ
Bellara snorted and didnât say any more on the subject and went back to staring at her food.Â
Lucanis placed a cup of tea on the table for Rook.Â
âOh, thank you.â She smiled up at him. âYou didnât have to do this.â
âI wanted to. Try think of anything else you want, I can add it and the next time we get to Treviso I will get us all restockedâÂ
âThatâs really sweet Lucanis, I think we should be able to go soon, I just have to check in with everyone elseâÂ
He nodded and went back to scourging the kitchen.Â
âBellaraâ Rook looked over at her âwhats on your mind, You are clearly distracted and it can not just be about my very good bootsâÂ
She heard Lucanis snort behind herÂ
âItâs, I donâtâŠ. You know, don't worry about it. I shouldnât question youâÂ
âYou should definitely question me, especially if something Iâve done has upset you this much.âÂ
âItâs Julian, They Mayor if DeMetas Crossing, You let him go, after everything he didâÂ
âI sent him to the Wardens, not let him goâ
âBut he should have just died, right there with everyone else whose death he caused.âÂ
Rook took a moment âI can see how that would seem like justice, but my thought was that if he survives the joining, which many donât, he will have to spend his life now staring down the same horror he brought to those people, he will travel Thedas killing darkspawn walking through stinking pits of despair, while that same blight sings in his blood. And if he survives all of that, he will still die to blight, it will take him in the end, but maybe he will have done some good.â
Bellara was still frowning âbut why would the Wardens even want such a greedy cowardly personâÂ
Rook sipped at her tea, brewed perfectly, Lucanis was already a great addition for this alone âWardens are not picky. It is not an easy life and many would not just choose it especially if there is not a current blight to drive them. Many wardens join as a way to get out of life in prison or even the noose.Â
âIs, is that how you joined?âÂ
Rook thought she heard Lucanis chuckleÂ
She smiled at Bellara âhave you not heard of the murderous Dalish mage, terrorizing the countryside, saved from templar steel by joining the wardens?âÂ
âNoâ Bellaras eyes widened as she looked at Rook, âI, waitâ she noticed Rook trying to not laugh âYou kiddingâÂ
âI amâÂ
Lucanis was laughing but as well âIâve only known Rook a few days and could tell you she would not hurt an innocent personâÂ
Rook felt a slight blush, and saw Bellara watching her. She had already told everyone else about Rooks reaction to Lucanis, calling it a crush and making fun of her for it.Â
âI asked to join. My clan was attacked by darkspawn. We had managed to hold them back but we were backed up against a steep cliff. It allowed us to create a central entry point for the Darkspawn, but they outnumbered us and we were losing people so fast, then with no warning, Wardnes showed up. They saved my Clan.âÂ
âOh, wow, and you didnât want to stay with your clan after all that?
âIt wasnât an easy choice, but I was the fourth mage so I had known from a young age that I would have to leave and at least join another clan. My dad had died some time before and my mom and sister were both killed in the attack. I was angry and heartbroken. I saw the wardens as a way to protect others, to stop something like that from happening to anyone else. I was not ready or fully aware of what I was getting myself into. The wardens warned me as much, but also did not turn me away, said mages, especially a spirit healer like myself are always needed and they could teach me to fight.âÂ
âDo you ever regret it?âÂ
Rook sighed âno, I miss them all, especially after meeting your and the Veil jumpers. It had been a long time since I was around other Dalish. It opened some old wounds. And you remind me of Ellie. Smart, curious, and filled with so much light. She would have loved the veil jumpers and seeing Arlathan. But I.. at least I hope, I make their memory proud, that maybe Iâve helped some people and done some good.âÂ
âOh, Rook.âÂ
âRook,â Neve walked in, fully dressed for the day âViper reached out, he wants to speak with you. Can you get to Minrathous today?âÂ
âYeah, let me change, and we can go, Lucanis why donât you give me the list, I can also get the items on itâÂ
He pulled it to his chest. âI will get these things myself in Treviso. I am not sure after what Iâve seen here I can trust you with the shoppingâÂ
âRudeâÂ
Bellara laughed âRook is a good cook, though I think some of her food is too spicyâÂ
âLet the assassin have his way. Iâll just pick up dinner tonight, and maybe some snacks and I promise we will get to Treviso soonâÂ
âYou can also get those bootsâ Bellara chimed in.Â
âBellaraâ Rook shook her head. âDisparage my boots all you want, if I donât need them I'm not spending money on themâ She rinsed out her bowl and cup, trying to hide how being this close to Lucanis made her heart race. She really did not know what to do about how he affected her.Â
She gave a nod to Lucanis and left to get get her armor on
âShe really does need new bootsâ Bellara sighedÂ
âIf you can get her size, I know the best cobbler in TrevisoâÂ
âThat would be amazing, and she thinks you donât like herâÂ
âWhy would I not like her, she saved me from the Ossuary? And has been very kind to meâÂ
Bellara blushed ânot like that, I mean you know what. Itâs nothing. I misspoke and I have things that need to get done, correspondence to the veil jumpers and Nadas Dirthalen will not fix itself.âÂ
Bellara jumped up leaving her bowl behind uneaten
Lucanis cleaned up for her wondering, not for the first time in the past few days, what exactly he was signed up for. Â

I've had this idea on my head that when you got to get Lucanis the first time he looks at my warden Rook he thinks "who is this and why are they dressed like a warden? wait no, they have to be a Warden, no one would just dress like one.
a life time ago I was working on a slow burnt non inquisitor OC Blackwall Romance fic. It was fairly niche but I loved it. Then do to a mix of things from depression to life events I didn't get to finish it. Now as I fall in Love with Lucanis and this series again, I kind of want to go back to it and finish their story. It mostly just feels good to be able to write again.
Warnings: Injuries, Mentions of blood, NO Spoilers :)
Summary: Lucanis gets injured as is too stubborn to ask for help with it.
Hope you enjoy! Requests for Dragon Age are open
You spotted his limp almost immediately after the battle. The fight was a tough one, adding a few more scars to your already growing collection, no thanks to the Venitori. You watched as he limped through the Eluvian, whispering curses under his breath when his daggers would accidentally hit it. The group filtered out towards their rooms, getting ready to shed the armour that began to pinch at their skin after a long day. Magic hummed around them as they were greeted home.
The meditation chamber hummed in greeting when you walked through the doors. The sound of armour clattering on the ground as you peeled yourself away from it. You stood at the mirror examining the new collection of bruises and small scraps you had gained today. Your magic soothing the aches and pains away as the minor ones began to fade. Part of you wanted to join the others for whatever was for tea, the lingering exhaustion had finally caught up. You sighed as your body hit the chair in the center of the room, the cushions moulding around your body perfectly as you fell into a nap -praying that Solas would interrupt this one this time.
The sound of the door opening made you shoot up, your hair messy and sticking up all over the place. You rubbed the back of your hand over your eyes as you turned to face the intruder only to find Lucanis standing at the entrance. "Is everything alright?" You grumbled out. His posture was stiff even though he was hunched over, and a purple glow surrounded him to let you know that it wasn't him. "Spite?" You questioned again, sitting further up as you watched him walk around the chair in front of you. "The fool is injured and bleeding everywhere...help him" Spite gritted out before releasing his hold on Lucanis. You barely had time to catch him as the man fell forward collapsing half on you and the sofa. Then you could see the large patch of blood on the side of his leg. The blood had seeped through enough it lingered on your fingertips when you gently pressed it trying to find the wound.
"Maker Lucanis" you muttered as you manoeuvred him to lay on the chair. You knelt on the floor next to him, sending your healing magic to gently probe the area only to find that he had half wrapped it in a thick padding of bandages. You paused before, groaning loudly as your fingers began to undo the ribbons of fabric that held his trousers up before shimming them down to his knees. Your cheeks flushed at the intimacy of the situation; it had only been a few months and your constant flirting hadn't really got you anywhere besides lingering gazes and unspoken emotions behind his eyes. You cursed your fingers being so cold as you began to slowly unwrap the bandages on his legs, his body flinching as you accidentally made contact with his skin. The air between you both began to glow a light green as your magic had finally found its target, you watched carefully as the skin started to fuse together, the blood stopping its flow down his leg.
You moved from his side to grab a couple of washcloths and water before you began to gently clean the area. When you gazed back up at him, you were met with his eyes open watching you. The two of paused as you waited for him to speak first, you watched as his eyes flickered towards the light scar that lingered on his leg and then back to you. "Spite bought you here...He asked me to help" You spoke, your voice barely above a whisper as you waited for his reaction. "Of course, he did" Lucanis grumbled. You removed your hand from his leg, backing up away from the chair to give him room to move about. You eyed up the small whisps of hair that led to his underwear as he stood to dress himself. "I'm sorry for stepping in the wound was still bleeding and he asked me-"
"It's fine, Thank you"
You nodded as he stood up to leave. Your eyes lingered on his retreating form. Lucanis turned again, his fingers barely touching the door handle. "Hopefully next time I'm like that it won't be because of a injury"
He left you standing in the middle of the room like a blushing idiot, a grin on his face as he made his way back towards the pantry of the lighthouse, no limp in sight anymore.

Rook groaned as dropped to the ground. They had done good work in Lavendel but it was exhausting. Fighting the blight was one thing she knew she was good at, but this. She was not as attuned as Antoine to the change but she could feel it, singing through her blood. It left her feeling weak and exhausted to her core, she fell back letting her head hit the stone harder than she should off, mumbling under her breath in anger at herself.Â
The sky was oddly clear, just a few clouds with bright streaks of stars shining through. Pushing past the ache in her body, the smell of rot and blood and blight she tried to let her mind clear.Â
âWhat are you doing? â Lucanis was looking down at her with a lifted eyebrow. âThere has to be more comfortable places to lie downâÂ
âSays the man that sleeps in a pantryâÂ
He gave a soft smile âI do have a cotâÂ
âIâm looking at the stars.âÂ
He turned his head up âIs it helping?âÂ
âA littleâÂ
Lucanis sat down and stretched out next to her, much more elegantly than she had managed.
They lay next to each other in silence for a time, he hand itched to reach out and take his, but she kept still, afraid of scaring him off.Â
âIt is beautifulâ He broke the silence.Â
âIt is, I have always liked the stars, no matter what was going on, or where I was, I know the stars are there. I like how safe it feels at the lighthouse, but I miss sunsets and sunrisesâÂ
âAnd starsâ He had lifted up to his elbow and was looking at her âyou really do find the beauty in most thingsâÂ
âIn some things the beauty if very obviousâÂ
He gave her that sweet smile again, like he was still surprised she would compliment him
âYou should see the sunset in Treviso, the way the canals catch the light. I know a spot, you can see the entire city. And the stars there are truly lovelyâÂ
âI would really like that.âÂ
âThen I will take youâÂ
She could feel the heat on her face, the ache in her chest, He did this to her, made her react in ways she was not use to or even fully sure what to do about.Â
âRookâ Davrin yelled out âThere you are. Evka got some new reports, wants to show what they foundâÂ
She Sighed as Lucanis stood, offering a hand to help her up. âBack to it thenâÂ
She felt the slight delay before he let go of her hand. âBack to itâÂ

"I'm so sorry, Lucanis. I promise I won't leave you to deal with this by yourself-"
"This isn't your problem, Rook." Even if he tried to pull his hand away from where she clasped it between both of hers, her grip is too tight for that.
And, if he stops to admit it to himself, a little too wanted, as well.
"It doesn't have to be yours alone, either. I just need to ask Neve something really quick, before I forget it happened."
Lucanis sets down his cup.
"Which part of it? The Venatori witch bathing in an ocean of blood or where she started to turn old the minute we pulled her out of it?"
"No, no, what she said - I'll be right back, I promise. Keep the coffee warm for me?" She forces a smile onto her face as his hand drops uselessly to his knee.
Then she trips over the edge of the rug and pulls down a chair as she all but flies out of the room and into - well, the courtyard, such as it is. Their plates still sit by the stove, cold and untouched. He'd made the gratin because of her off-handed comment that she misses it. Thought it turned out good, too, when he tasted it.
And now, because of him, she goes hungry and the dish cold.
Lucanis doesn't follow. If she wanted him to know, or thought he needs to, she would haven taken him along. He brews up another coffee, instead.
Spite threatens to split them down the middle by his legs for the inaction. So Lucanis makes the coffee a little stronger, chops up some extra dill for Rook's plate.
-
"Dulzura, what's wrong?" He finally asks, after the third of her sighs, each louder than the other, each sounding troubled like a cat that needs to get up and walk three steps for food.
"Oh, nothing," but her fingers grip tighter around her cup. "Don't worry about me."
"You worry about me all the time. Let me help."
Another heavy sigh, but the one that means she's worn down. He feels a little bad for pushing her.
Beside him, Spite screams so loud it makes his ears ring.
"Lucanis?" When he looks back at her, the worry in her eyes makes him feel sick.
"Explain."
"What she called him. Amatus. Before he killed her, and when - when Emmrich made her speak." Her tongue darts out, wets her lips, takes off what little glitter the day had left on them. "I asked Neve what it meant, and- she said it's a term of endearment."
No.
"No. We- we found the lovers. We killed her."
"Seems those two weren't the only ones."
Spite's tantrum feels loud enough to make her ears ring, also, even if she can't hear him right now. She can see the candleflame move with the rage.
"I don't know which is worse - that she helped him get rid of me because they were lovers, or that they teamed up and became lovers along the way. That they fell in love because of what I do to those around me."
The saucer cracks with how hastily she puts down her cup. Puts the hand not covered in chocolate on his knee. It does not still the bouncing.
"One does not have to be worse than the other. Sometimes things just suck. It's not because of what you do to those around you, or Spite. You care too much. I know you do." The words don't comfort him, and she can tell.
"Or maybe she dangled the prospect of affection in front of him to get him to do her bidding," she offers, eventually, poorly.
"You believe that as much as I do."
"I'm sorry, Lucanis. If there's anything I can-"
He leans back into his chair. His heart hammers in his chest, in his throat. He thinks he might cry.
"No, no. I- thank you, for telling me. I'll let you know as soon as Teia and Viago send word. Excuse me. I'd like to be alone for a moment."
