Encke owns a potted cactus. He has named it "Spike", and talks to it when he is alone. One night Keeler caught him doing it, and made googly eyes and a little knit hat for "Spike", which the cactus now wears proudly.

Deimos was born on Earth and was originally blond. His family pressured him to become a navigator, but Deimos wanted to be a fighter instead. So he dyed his hair (ALL his hair) black and booked a one-way ticket to the Mars colonies, where he enlisted for the Alliance with no one the wiser.
