brightest day, blackest night

this post has been in my drafts for about a year and i dont know how much longer this blog will be alive so i figured i might as well just throw this one out to the wolves and see what happens. lets get this bread.  

shiro and keith were such little shits when it came to playing hunger games

they went into the hunger games servers that specifically said teaming wasn’t allowed and teamed

keith was especially a little shit because he would do that thing where he would press shift and block to show that he wanted other players to join him and shiro and as soon as they let their guard down he double crossed them

they also were the team that ALWAYS camped spawn and killed anyone in the surrounding areas

after killing everyone during death match they had a “fair” fight

i say fair in quotations because shiro let keith win like 99% of the time because keith was like 10-12 y/o and he really did not want his very temperamental little brother to rage quit

moving to the opposite side of the spectrum: the garrison trio

honestly they didnt play a lot of mcsg they just mainly had a realm that pidge paid for

they all lived in one house and it was a mess

literally never let all three of them go into the nether together they will all die and chaos will ensue

hunk after a particularly terrible trip to the nether where they all died in lava: YOU’RE BOTH TEARING THIS FAMILY APART

while hunk and pidge were working on stuff with red stone to make their stuff more efficient, lance went mining and exploring

pidge: okay so if we add a lever there we should be able to-

lance: gUYS I FOUND WOLVES

pidge & hunk: DOG? DOG? DOG? DOG? DOG? 

the five of them met while playing factions

hunk, lance, and pidge joined just For Teh Lolz….. they went out into the area where pvp is enabled, ready to start their own faction…… and immediately got Killed by keith and shiro

keith and shiro mainly play in mini games servers so when they join the realm they are the most chaotic presences

lance: alright we need to clear some of this forest to make room for our doc- KEITH WHEN I SAID CLEAR THE FOREST I MEANT CUT THE TREES DOWN NOT USE A FLINT AND STE- keith: THIS IS SO MUCH MORE EFFICIENT THOUGH lance: WE NEED THE WOOD IDIOT

shiro and keith are both the types to get an army of dogs but where shiro just gets a ton of dogs just to have them because he likes dogs, keith gets a pack of dogs and gives each and every one of them warrior cats-esque names

keith treats dying like a minor inconvenience no matter what hes doing. hes every single one of those screenshots you see of someone claiming they can do something and then dying.

keith is literally never at their base he is always exploring

keith once took shiro to get the woodland mansion map at a village that was like 5000 blocks out and shiro died by falling in a ravine when they were 300 blocks away

building off that last point, shiro likes to go exploring however he dies in the Dumbest ways. including:

getting knocked off his dirt tower by the phantom 

drowning because he got stuck between blocks in a sunken ship

speared to death by a drowned digging up buried treasure

this one isnt about adventuring but he had just spent like half an hour getting levels to enchant in the nether and as he came out of the nether portal (which they have placed on a giant jungle tree) he looked down at the water below, thought “i can make it” and then jumps. he makes it technically but he places glass at the last moment and dies from fall damage from falling on the glass. may or may not be based off a true story.

you know what. im gonna say it. lance is the only one of them that genuinely good at building.

pidge and hunk are good at building from reference but lance is the only one that can get an idea of what he wants to do in his mind and then just make it.

keith is a “digging into a mountain and calling it a day” supremacist

shiro does try to build but, bless his soul, he sucks 

shiro uses glazed terracotta in every build without fail and nobody has the heart to tell him how ugly it looks

i havent talked about hunk enough so heres a random bullet dedicated to him

hunk is good at detailing builds. hes good at making stuff like make shift furniture. this is why he and lance are the dream team in this essay i WILL-

i briefly mentioned this earlier but hes good at redstone! ugh intellectual king!

pidge uses redstone for evil (more on that later) but hunk uses it always to make things easier! hunk made an entire automated chest organization system UGH INTELLECTUAL K

quick list of everything else hunk has made for the Gang to make things easier:

iron farm

villager farm (lance helped with this because he finds the concept of villager breeding hilarious)

he made a roller coaster to impress shiro ldkhsfg

shiro: hey guys look at this!!! *shows everyone his pressure plate triggered automatic door * hunk, hiding his whole goddamn roller coaster away: oh!! ……………yea its good shiro!

he can also make noteblock covers. UGH I

i mentioned that she uses redstone for evil. so heres a list of what i mean by that

putting a noise maker underneath keiths house so he never knows peace

she does that fakeout lava prank to shiro. he walks into his home, falls in lava then immediantly gets dropped into water

shes too fearful of hunk to prank him since she knows hes the only one with the skill to counter her

lance designed his and hunks skins too look like how they do in real life, However, for halloween one year lance surprised hunk by making them both edits of their skins where he is in a sasuke costume and hunk is in a naruto costume and they havent changed their skins since

shiro just has the default steve skin. keith tried to get him to change it but quickly stopped once he realized how funny it is to watch people die at the hands of someone with the default steve skin when he and shiro play mcsg

Shiro: to let everyone know that no one helps in this house

a character showing one or two leadership qualities doesn’t mean that they should automatically be the black paladin and that’s just the tea. the black paladin isn’t only about leadership and it’s reductive to think that

ESPECIALLY now that shiro is back after all the shit he’s been through y’all want to take one more thing away from him?

y’all are really good at ignoring all of the reasons why shiro is the black paladin and the bond he’s formed with black

like did y’all even watch season 2??? he literally went head to head with zarkon in the astral plane just to defend the black lion and understands that the only way to interact with his lion is through a bond of mutual respect and trust

“no one controls the black lion!” shiro might not necessarily be able to understands what black’s gone through but he knows what it’s like to only be used as a weapon and to be terrified of being used to hurt people you love. that shared trauma has created a bond between them that will Never be as strong with someone else. sorry

like shiro has put so much effort and trust into his bond with black!! he’s still (i think) the only paladin who has reached that level of trust with his lion (remember in season 1 when he was the only one who could see through black’s eyes???)

when shiro died black /took his consciousness into her own/ to protect him. she /felt/ her paladin die because of her old paladin and she immediately saved him. and then held him in her consciousness to preserve his life

THIS COMING FROM THE LION WHO DIDNT REALLY TRUST SHIRO UNTIL SEASON 2 because of all the stuff zarkon did

remember when shiro almost died in the astral plane and the first thing he did was thank black for saving him?? i love one man!

not tb rude but the only reason that keith and clone shiro were able to fly black was because it was shiro’s wish for keith to become bp after him and because people would have DIED if clone shiro didn’t fly

when allura got shiro’s consciousness back into his body black roared because her paladin was back and she was happy!

We spent a LOT of time with Shiro as he grew into the Black Paladin job. We spent a lot of time seeing him being juxtaposed with Zarkon, the previous Black Paladin. We saw him suffer at the hands of the Empire in ways no one else had, save Allura. No one else grew as Shiro did. Shiro’s possible fatal flaw was putting up walls because he was afraid of getting hurt- and his reaching out to the Black Lion and earning her trust was huge LOWERING of those walls, and Black responded.

And this meant that no other character was going to be able to fill this spot. Ever.

Redundancy in a story- retreading an arc’s beats only with another character- gets boring as shit. It’s why I couldn’t care about Pidge rescuing both her brother… and THEN finding her father. It’s why the backstory of the original paladins bored me to tears. It’s retelling the same story twice- nothing new was added here. If we had been meant to buy any other character in the BP slot, we had to show why that character was worthy, why that character fit, and why no one else could do the same job.

We had plenty of time to see why Keith was a great Red Paladin. His impulsiveness, bravery and support for Shiro made him an ideal Right Hand Man. Conversely, we’ve never seen Lance really do anything to make him fit here. Allura is probably the only person who really could have fit the personality type for Black Paladin, but we saw her being amazing in the Castle Ship. She had magic and her role as Commander/Queen/Diplomat for the others. She was wasted in Blue and I don’t think Black would have been a great fit for her either, even if she came the closest. No one started off in the wrong position, which is what we should have seen from the beginning, if the Lion Swap was always meant to make sense.
