IVE BEEN HOLDING THIS IN FOR TOO LONG AND I JUST REMEMBERED THE MUSICAL EXISTS SO SIT DOWN AND LISTEN!!! look, I love the musical. I saw it for my birthday, it was the best. fucking loved the rumble. but BRO, I feel like they mischaracterized Darry T~T like, okay, yeah, Throwing In The Towel was fairly accurate, that man is SO scared of doing wrong by his brothers that he would genuinely wonder if putting them in the system would be better for them when he makes a massive fuck-up. BUT LOOK- LOOK- as much as I love Runs In The Family, Darry would NEVER willingly give up his brothers so he could do what he wanted. Those are his Brothers and his Babies. He played with them and learned to change their diapers and made silly faces when they cried. He snuck into their cribs on a regular basis so he could make sure they're safe at night. He never ONCE entertained the idea of leaving them for any reason other than he wanted whats best for THEM. That's what pissed me off about the musical and made it difficult to really immerse myself in it, especially during the Slap scene! Darry would never guilt-trip his little brother. Would never get up in Pony's face and directly say to him 'you're a burden and all you do is throw away my hard-earned money and food and effort.' He would never blame Soda and Pony for his problems, not even mentally. Because he loves them, and he cares for them, and even SUGGESTING that he'd leave them would get someone hit. He yelled at Ponyboy in the book because he was worried, he yelled at Soda because he was tired of the push-back Soda was giving him knowing that Darry was worrying for hours until Pony came home. I made a whole separate post explaining why Darry didn't enjoy the slap, or get relief out of it, or did it consciously, or anything like that. I loved the musical, really, but I just can't stand how they showed Darry as this bitter person who'd treat his brothers like that! Yeah he struggled, and that deserves to be shown, but not like this. Not by making him someone who would blame his problems on his brothers and yell at them outta anger instead'a worry.
