I'm so glad I'm moving out of my parent's place, but I'm so tired of them hounding me bc they feel entitled to have a key to my apartment :/
Like I'm 24 years old, damn near 25. I'm a grown adult, my name is on the lease, the bills, the internet, all of it. In my eyes, they aren't entitled to a key? Because they're not on the lease, nor are they my landlord?
But no, my parents continue to ask me over and over about ""their"" spare key and it's driving me up the wall. I literally said when the locks got changed "My spare is mine, I'll hold onto it." and ever since then, it's been "we need our spare back." ... Like no? Just... no?
And I do NOT understand their mentality here? Maybe it's because I'm the 1st of their kids to actually move-move, and this is how they're handling it (albeit it's a poor way of handling it) but I feel like my boundaries are being completely disregarded in this situation.
But these are the same people who have cameras inside their home, so I can't even get a cup of water from the kitchen without being recorded. My mom keeps saying "We just want the key for safety purposes" but I've been unable to walk around their house for the last 6 years without being on camera. No move unseen. To me, it seems like it's all about control and surveilling. "Safety purposes" go out the window when privacy was always optional in my childhood home.
Not to mention, I won't be living alone? My girlfriend will live there too? And me and her both agree that my parents don't need a key, especially when me and her are both some flavor of queer / transgender... and my parents are fucking transphobic .. so obviously I don't want them to just be able to come in whenever they fucking feel like it? My girlfriend has been miserable, closeting herself while we've lived here- we've put up with their surveillance at their house, we're not gonna deal with it at mine?
Not to mention, GOD forbid they see something they disagree with, bc then I'll have to put up with the backlash from them.
Like I work 40 hours a week, I pay my bills with the paycheck I earn from my job- it's my home! My apartment! I am just so beyond exhausted with this "You're our kid, therefore we own you" thought process that I've put up with my entire life.
Mom would always say "You disappeared when you moved last time, we'd never hear from you" ... Like yeah Bestie, that was by design. I was avoiding you intentionally OTL and this is the type of shit that drove me away in the first place. It's just driving me away again.
