i get asked fairly often what my opinion on k9 units is and this might surprise people, but i actually don't really like to talk about the animal welfare concerns surrounding k9 units (and MWDs as well, but i get asked about those less often)
i think dwelling on the animal welfare aspect of it sort of distracts from the main issue, which is that these animals are being used as living weapons against marginalized people (predominantly black people) and even if they were treated like royalty I'd still want them abolished altogether
and also i think it's insulting to the people getting savaged by these animals for us to quibble about whether or not the poor heckin pupperino is being abused
i cant describe to you how harrowing it is looking through the tags on this post and seeing some of you do the exact thing im criticizing here in between people's horror stories about having k9 units used against them.

I think it's stupid when people say political violence has no place in this country when our government uses violence against poor people every day. Why does a person sleep outside in the cold when the car dealership is heated all night? Why do people go hungry when grocery stores pack dumpsters with perfectly edible food? there is a very real tendency of teenagers with anxiety disorders self diagnosing with considerably more stigmatized and impairing mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia, DID, personality disorders), but the best response to that isn't to get angry with them for "appropriating" lol. instead you show them coping resources for the problems they're actually having and deemphasize diagnostic categories in general. if an 18 year old is claiming to have alzheimer's, they're probably making an innocent mistake and are in genuine distress. be kind.
Also I think this trend comes, at least in part, from how brushed aside anxiety disorders can be. If your parents and teachers dismiss you with 'oh everyone feels anxious', then inevitably you're going to start thinking that there must be something else going on with you
”You must feel very scared right now; let’s talk about how to help you personally, tailored to your symptoms” will always be more helpful than “stop faking (X) for attention”. If theyre that desperate for attention or an explanation, something is wrong.
