Things I like (mostly)

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"

Scientists in China have developed a more efficient form of solar desalination that uses 47.4% less energy than alternatives. After the first year of testing, the scientists believe that at scale it would be able to desalinate water more cheaply than producing bottled water.

There’s a lot of hate on widowers and I saw a woman say “You cannot compete with a dead woman.” which is perhaps a reasonable statement to say if he’s constantly comparing you to his dead partner but that wasn’t what the post was about. And I realized “Oh my God, these people genuinely feel like they’re constantly in competition with their spouse’s exes and the ex being dead makes them feel insecure that they cannot best her.”

1) I am widowed. my Beloved Wife of Blessed Memory(tm) died in 2019

2) I got together with my current partner about 18 months later

3) when I am committing acts of Foolishness my current partner loves to gesture at the sky to my dead wife, like "do you see this shit, my liege" and regularly says to me things like "[wife's name] was right about this" when my Foolishness inevitably comes back to bite me in the ass

Not because he's losing his best friend or anything but because he can actually now understand the shape of Grace's loss, the enormity of what he gave up.

Humans fit together like puzzle pieces. Our hands fit together perfectly, our bodies find comfortable ways to curl up around each other. We even match the way we breathe with someone if we're close enough. Rocky has only ever seen Grace by himself and while he knows humans are a social species, obviously, he really only really has Eridian social behaviors to base that knowledge off of (Grace said movies are inaccurate to real human relationships but didn't explain how exactly). For Eridians touch is nice but it isn't like it is for humans, a whole system that goes all the way down to hormones. There's no way he could have understood how deeply baked in connection is for humans until he saw it for himself.

He finally has a reference for just how much Grace was missing and it tears him up to think about how close his friend came to just living like that forever. A single note in a song written for a choir.

Obi-Wan Kenobi really took one look at R2D2 in the middle of the desert and said “No, Luke, I’ve never seen this fucking droid in my life. Looks like a real bitch though. Not that I’d know. This is my first time meeting the asshole.”
