Nancy and J’s breakup included love, I would never argue that it didn’t, but it still shocks me how many people online read it as a regular airing of grievances. Those two confessed that they were never charmed by load-bearing parts of each other’s personality (music, style, writing), and the disconnect and resentment between them grew to such a level that it had them disassociating, trying to cope with vices of their choice, and throwing away each other’s shit. That’s not a little misunderstanding, that’s “pretending everything is okay” for YEARS. It’s telling that in s4, while 2000 miles away for months, they still wanted distance.

Steve, after s2, is done being avoidant. Pretending everything’s okay cost him the only person he ever loved romantically, so he’s now heart-on-sleeve guy. And so s4 Steve’s UD deathwalk confession to Nancy is just…“This person I’ve grown into and the relationships I’ve built I owe to you. Every part of you has always been and will always be loved by me. You are special. For me, it’s always been you.”

I’m rewatching ST4 and I can’t help but laugh at the scene of Nancy explaining to Fred why Jonathan is the “perfect boyfriend.”

Because why is she very clearly describing Steve…

Like ma’am… the traits you’re listing off? The growth? The dependable, protective, emotionally-available traits? That is not Jonathan. Or at least not the Jonathan we’ve actually seen on screen. That is textbook Steve Harrington.

I’m sitting there like… did the writers do this on purpose? Is this intentional irony? Are we supposed to clock that she’s subconsciously describing Steve? Nancy hasn’t even experienced fully-developed Steve yet at that point, so clearly the writers genuinely think Jonathan possesses all these traits… either that or she actually doesn’t know her boyfriend at all and is describing what she wants him to be.

I’m just 😭

It honestly feels like they wanted Jonathan to be everything Steve became, so instead of showing it… they just had Nancy tell us he is.
