A conversation I don’t think yall are ready for yet is that you can love a character sooooo much and relate to them and see yourself in them but at the end of the day they’re still fake and that’s why someone else’s take on them or headcanon about them isn’t a direct message about you or insult to your identity. If your identity is so wrapped up in a character that you can’t distinguish between reality and fiction, then you are the problem. Not some random person online who interprets the character differently than you.

this also goes for when you hate a character soooooo much and relate them to every person who hurt you and see everyone you hate in them, at the end of the day they're still fake and someone else's love for them is not a commentary on your trauma

#i think the with the whole relating to a character thing....#idk. it's kind of an easy way to make an argument for the character being well-written#without actually engaging with their writing on a craft level#and then anytime someone offers a critique of that character the critique gets dismissed#because the person who loves the character has set themself up as an authority and you kind of can't argue with them at that point#because if you criticize a character who is relatable to them you are criticizing a part of them and it becomes personal#but a character being relatable is a bonus#and being relatable DOES NOT equal well-written#writing/reading is about empathy and expression and understanding different points of view#and i think there is something to be said about characters being relatable if you don't see yourself represented in media#however a lot of petty fandom discourse surrounding favourite characters tends to come back to people who are too attached#and take it very personally when their views are challenged (via @myreia)
