i wonder if the āsweater curseā affects relationships with oneself as well? i had to completely unravel mine because a) i fucked up raglan angles, and b) i want it knit on 4-mm needles, not 3-mm (HUGE difference, so much softer). but as i am 38 cm in, iām beginning to think, am i worth all this trouble??
You are definitely worth the trouble. That is, as long as it is an enjoyable knit/pattern/yarn combination aside from the mistakes.
Boyfriend Sweater Curse
Iām wanting to make myself and my husband sweaters. I had heard about the boyfriend sweater curse back in the early stages of our relationship. We are not superstitious people (we got married on Friday the 13th!), but this was something we werenāt willing to risk.
Fast forward 6 years to now as I am working through knitting and crocheting Christmas gifts for the knit-worthy people in my life. For my husband, I was planning on only knitting him a pair of socks, but when I knit my dad a cowl, I had him try it on since heās the only guy available at the time. He stated that he wanted the same pattern of cowl and a hat to go with it if I had time, because it would be great for skiing. I promptly made him both and even though I made multiple visible mistakes (but not terrible) in the hat (forgot to do the middle cable stitching in half of the cables), he reassured me that he loves the hat and doesnāt mind.
Iāve been waffling on whether or not one of my relatives is knit-worthy, so I tried to find guidance from the interwebs. I foundĀ this great guide where you add or subtract points based on different things and end up with a score. There are multiple levels of scores that correlate to how knit-worthy the person is. (Are You Knit-Worthy? on Tabithaās Heart) The relative scored 80, so they are in the āneither worthy nor unworthyā level. The top level that is for scores of above 150 points gives you permission to knit that person a sweater or something intricate. I already knew my husband was totally knit-worthy (we might not have made it this far if he wasnāt), but I was curious as to what his score was. 370! Okay, time to reconsider the sweater.
I searched in the Ravelry forums for posts about the boyfriend sweater curse. Even though the comments I have been reading are over 10 years old, they are giving me some great insight as to why I can knit him a sweater! He is actively supportive of my yarn habit (more than just letting me buy what I want. When weāre in an LYS on a vacation, he tends to get to talking with the shop owner and sometimes I have to wait for him to get done after I have already spent a while deciding on what to buy. Heck! About a year or two into dating, he took me to our LYS when I had had a bad day and bought me nice yarn! He also bought be a project bag from birdlegbags that I was waffling on whether I wanted to spend the money on or not, but really wanted. This year will be the second time I go to the local yarn festival (Wool Gathering at Youngās Jersey Dairy). He has offered to join me. When I said I would like to get a spinning wheel and learn how to spin, but itās a lot of money, he responded by saying that heās okay with spending that much on one as long as it looks awesome as well as being very functional. At the beginning of June, we went on vacation and he chose where we were going based on the resort that has a fiber farm on the grounds where you can hold one of the angora rabbits! (Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa in New Hampshire)
I also read a few tips as to get around the curse. Have a few other people knit one stitch each. Make a mistake. Involve him in the process. I donāt know if Iāll have anyone knit any on it, but I will likely make a mistake that I wonāt catch, knowing my track record. I will most definitely be involving him in the process by having him choose the yarn. I might want to keep it a bit of a secret as to what the pattern looks like, so I might show him sweaters similar and see what he likes. I know he likes some cabling, only a little on his socks, but I donāt know about his sweaters.
tl;dr:Ā My husband will be getting a knitted sweater that Iāve made, hopefully by Christmas 2019. He will be involved in choosing the yarn and the pattern.
This was exactly what I expected and more
Condom filled with tea
Itās 4:41am, my insomnia is in full swing, and as soon as I unmuted this I skipped the laughing and went straight to crying.

āāIām going to speak to a group of women today.ā said my mom. āI had it on my vision board. And in the picture, the audience was even a group of women!ā Although a vision board sounds like something that I would be all about, itās something that I had never done until this year! Over the summer, I did a lot of planning and goal setting. I reevaluated longterm goals, wrote to-do lists for short term goals, and knew exactly what I wanted for the upcoming school year. However, I always thought vision boards were a little⦠cheesy. Dream It Alive Then I found this website, Dream It Alive. I liked that I could create the board online, instead of dragging out scissors, glue, and a stack of old magazines. I also really liked that it gives you a checklist of different areas of your life (much like Feng Shui), so that your dreams/goals can be balanced! Once you choose an area of life, you follow the link to several stock photos that could represent what you envision for yourself. OR you can upload your own⦠which I probably would do next time. Goal Writing For each photo, you write a short goal 1-3 sentences. Then you do what is possibly my favorite part: You select the feeling/emotion you will feel upon completion of this goal. I like this exercise because I have never thought about that before. Why is this goal important to me? What emotion will I feel once Iāve completed it? It really helped to put things in perspective. Then you can select whether your goal is private or public. I set all of mine to private, just because it felt weird to have them public. (I donāt mind sharing with you, though!) Board Arrangement I tried and tried, but I couldnāt find a way to rearranged the photos once they were on my board. They will āstackā from the bottom right corner and end at the top left corner. If you complete all 10 categories, your layout will stack in this order: -Bottom Row: Right Corner, Middle, Left Corner -Middle Row: Right Side, Right Middle, Left Middle, Left Side -Top Row: Right Corner, Middle, Left Corner I tell you this because I deleted and remade it a ton of times to get my photos in the order I wanted :) Once you have your board, you can save/download it etc. for a small fee. Or you can just keep it on the website (for free) and go back anytime you want. You have your own account, which allows you to edit your board whenever you need to. You can even mark goals as āfulfilledā and keep a list of accomplished dreams, which I really like! I definitely feel like seeing these goals every day is keeping me focused! :) Have you ever created a vision board? Did you choose online or a physical one at your home? Did you feel like it helped you reach your goals?! Follow Organized Charm on Instagram for daily productivity tips!ā

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE SHITTING ME
ABSOLUTELY FUCKING SHITTING ME
STARBUCKS DIDNT HAVE SICK LEAVE
Most places in the US that handle food donāt have sick leave. I work in a deli in a grocery store and I was sick for a week. I worked anyway because if I call out, I wouldnāt get paid and therefore not make rent and then Iād also get written up. Hope nobody got sick getting their lunchmeat lol.
It seems that the places that work with food punishes workers the hardest when they call out sick, which discourages sick people from abstaining from work and encourages the further spreading of disease.
So what happens if you start coughing blood or be a complete mess
You likely just get sent home for the day.
The only time I was ever sent home before the end of my shift was when I literally collapsed because my breathing was failing.
Itās honestly not unusual for management to just tell you to keep moving, drink extra cough syrup and ātough it out.ā
I work for an organization that is within the same building as a hospital.
Itās not just about having the leave.Ā Itās also about the culture of being allowed to use it.Ā I know, for instance, if nurses in certain departments use more than two days of sick time within a set time they have to do a formal meeting and explanation to their bosses.Ā Not like two in a row but two in a month.Ā So if you doĀ get sick you need to worry about whether or not itās legitimate.Ā
I get this all the time.Ā
I live in constant anxiety.Ā In 2004 I seroconverted and got my HIV diagnosis.Ā I had good enough numbers it was decided to hold off as on meds.Ā About two years later my CD4s cut in half and my viral load tripled.Ā I started to get sick all the time.Ā My doc took forEVER to convince to get me on meds.Ā And in that time I had 48 sick days.
My employers, unsurprisingly, noted this andĀ ānot to threaten you but if youāre not well enough to do this job weāll need to find someone who isā.Ā Which is ⦠passive aggressive but fun.
EVER SINCE.Ā Any time I take time off sick?
There jokes and comments that indicate people donāt think Iām actually getting sick.Ā That Iām just lazing around at home.Ā I have to, once in a while, show up to work sick - visibly sick - to proveĀ that Iām not trying to just get time off.
We do healthcare research.Ā
Inside a hospital.
GETTING the days is definitely a huge thing which is shitty beyond words. But then getting to useĀ them is the next hurdle.
Jesus fuck.
I am not surprised by this, but I am absolutely infuriated on your behalf, friend.

When I was a shift manager at Mcdonalds, and the idea of sick time was brought up, the HR boss simply said āManagers donāt get sickā
Bobble bobble bobble bobble bobble.
Iām still bobbling along. Iāve restarted this hat 4 times so far which was a pain but at least I have perfected my bobbling skills. Technically these are actually nupps but bobble is much more fun to say.Ā
Also, you know youāve done a good job of spinning when the ladies at spinning group donāt believe that you spun it. Even after they saw you spin it.
If you have cashmere taste and a Red Heart budget, this is a friendly reminder that acrylic yarn can be softened very easily by
Prewashing your skein in a lingerie bag with fabric softener and warm water in the washing machine & dryer
Soaking your finished project in a bath of cheap hair conditioner and warm water in your kitchen sink
I know there are a lot of yarn snobs who might talk a big game about how āterribleā acrylics are so, here. Have some tools to prove them wrong. š
How to prewash your skein to soften & fluff
How to soak a finished project to soften
Just in case youāre a yarn worker that prefers using tutorials before jumping in š
Iām going to need this as nice yarn for a sweater is out of my budget but I want to make sweaters.
