OK SO. I've been working on a fic for a while (almost two years) that idk if i'll ever post but long story short it's a mortal highschool au where everyone is in the marching band (because i'm a band kid). i wanted to give some characters disabilities based on their powers that they have in canon or just based on vibes. i have hEDS and POTS, so the descriptions of those conditions is based on my own experience, but if i incorrectly/disrespectfully described any of the others in this post please let me know, i only went to a few sites to research each condition so it's likely i made a mistake. there are more that I want to add, but I haven't had time to research the conditions. ANYWAYS HERE'S THE HEADCANONS FOR MY STUPID MARCHING BAND AU
Rachel has OSDD (Other Specified Dissociative Disorder). It’s similar to DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), but she only has one alter. This alter is named Delphi, and she fronts very rarely. Rachel can’t remember anything that happens while Delphi is fronting, and doesn’t know much about the alter. She doesn’t know what traumatic event happened that caused her to develop this disorder, she thinks Delphi is keeping the memories from her. Delphi first made herself present to Rachel in 9th grade. Rachel hasn’t been diagnosed with OSDD. Her parents don’t believe it’s real, and the therapists they’ve sent her to really suck. They think she’s just overly imaginative. Sometimes, Delphi takes control while she’s painting and creates pieces that Rachel doesn’t remember. Her friends are aware of Delphi, and many of them can tell when the alter is fronting, though only the ones who know her well.
Lou Ellen has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). She’s not really aware of it, but she has memory lapses and strange dreams she doesn’t understand and it all frustrates her beyond comprehension. The traumatic experience that caused her to develop DID was witnessing her father’s suicide at a young age, and since then she’s been living with her aunt. Will is the first person to notice her symptoms, and he isn’t really sure what to do about it.
Jason has seizure disorder. It developed as a result of him being struck by lightning around the time of his seventh birthday. He experiences both generalized and focal seizures. Most commonly, he has absence seizures, with other types of seizures happening sporadically. He very rarely has severe seizures or tonic-clonic seizures.
Thalia has persistent tic disorder. She’s been experiencing motor tics since around the time she ran away, and doctors have speculated the cause may be stress from that event that never went away. When she’s very stressed or fatigued, the tics are more frequent than usual. Common tics for her include rapid blinking, jerking her head to the right, clenching her fist, shrugging her shoulders, and stomping her foot. She claims flipping the bird is also a tic, but she just uses that as an excuse to do it all the time.
Hazel has POTS. She experiences “blackouts” and faints somewhat frequently. These may be small losses in consciousness, lasting a few minutes at most, or they may last upwards of an hour. She has a sodium deficiency, too. She overworks herself constantly, which severely worsens her symptoms because she’s not caring for herself properly. Frank, the perfect soul that he is, researches POTS so that he can understand her better and help her manage her symptoms when she needs it.
Nico has chronic fatigue syndrome, or myalgic encephalomyelitis. He’s constantly exhausted, and sleep doesn’t really fix it. He has a hard time sleeping, which only messes up his sleep schedule and makes it worse. He only really gets quality sleep when he passes out. He’s constantly overworking himself, not bothering to try pacing or any other management strategies besides his daily medication, which drives his lab partner, Will, up the wall.
Clovis has type 1 Narcolepsy, which also causes him to have cataplexy episodes. This doesn’t happen too often, but frequently enough that people are prepared to help him when it happens. He has fallen asleep at his instrument many times, though.
Jake has rheumatoid arthritis. His hands cramp up a lot, so he’s constantly wearing black compression gloves, but he also has silver splints that he made himself and wears for formal occasions
