hey!! your art is fantastic! do you have any tips for drawing box braids and other hairstyles with a lot of braids? I’ve been practicing for a while with refs but it still looks awkward, I can never seem to strike the right balance between defining every single braid and a jumble where it’s not even clear that they are braids.
My rule of thumb with braid styles is to imply details if you’re doing character designs with dynamic poses. In that case I think the gesture of the pose is more important with each braid. But if you’re doing portraiture, it would be wise to but a bit more focus and detail into the braid pattern/ size. With box braids, I would suggest laying out the simple shapes of the “box” pattern where the braids would stem from and build detail on top.
These aren’t box braids, but examples of the implications of detail with braided looks and the individual illustration of locs/twists
Keep on practicing! Don’t get discouraged. Use that frustration as motivation to improve🧸
