Hello and welcome to the Spud Skirmish!

This is a bracket where different ways to prepare a potato face off!

Rules for submissions:

- Submit your nominee in my askbox. Let me know the name of the dish. Photo/drawing optional. No AI images

- You may submit as many different dishes as you like. Please make each one a separate ask

- Must be a dish or beverage comprised primarily of potatoes

- Must be edible or drinkable

- Can be any form of potato preparation. Frying, baking, mashing, smashing, smooshing, grating, boiling, fermenting, distilling, air frying, electrocuting… all acceptable

- Can be from any country or culture, regardless of if you think most people would recognize it. Feel free to describe the dish in your ask, but this is optional as I can look it up

- You may explain in your submission why you think this form of potato should be in the pageant but this is optional

- Submissions close one week from today, at 11:59pm EST on Saturday, January 17th.

There are a lot of submissions/suggestions that are similar to one another. For example, there are several forms of fries (chips), several forms of roasted potatoes, several forms of potato pancakes, a few forms of “potatoes sautéed in a sauce,” four forms of au-gratin-esque potatoes, etc.

We can arrange this two different ways:

A. Bracket comprised of several mini-games, eg the Fries Minigame, the Potato Pancake Minigame, etc. If we choose this option, the first few rounds will involve dishes that are similar to each other facing off, with various champions emerging to battle each other later. The downside is that polls with two very similar options might be more boring.

Like so:

(Blue is potato pancakes, pink is fries, purple is sautéed, yellow is roasted, red-orange is au-gratin-esque.)

B. The different types are distributed evenly throughout the bracket. This way, individual early-round polls feature opponents that are more different from one another. Like so:

I forgot to leave though room for the blank non-colored options, but you get the idea.

So far there are 42 suggestions (including both submissions and ones I’ve come up with). If we can get 22 more, we can do a bracket of 64!

If we don’t get to 64, we could do prelim polls, but I’m worried that less-well-known ones will lose in a long list like that. But, I could include pics. Prelim polls would probably be four polls with 10-11 options and the top eight of each poll advance to the bracket.

Okay, now we’re actually past 64 ~

I can probably just restructure and consolidate, but also we can totally do prelims and I’ll just omit the dishes that I think are vulnerable to elimination based on being culturally specific out of it and have them advance automatically to the bracket. So go on! Keep submitting!

Someone also suggested gratin dauphinoise, which is like a combo of the two. Should we do all four??
