Realizing that work doesn’t feel like it’s helping my Japanese improve because it’s teaching me things that are NOT what I want to learn.

At this point I’m upper intermediate, so I know most of the essential skills that carry over between different settings. Basic grammar, function words, listening fundamentals.

Now, it’s most filling in the vocab, and unfortunately I’m spending 40 hours a week learning things like INVOICE and LOGISTICS and TAX WITHHELD and surprise surprise these things don’t help me read my fantasy mystery romance manga any more smoothly

seriously though, this is what ive been talking about. Like they lure you in with "100 words cover 50% of the language!" or whatever bs factoid, and then it's like 15 years later and you have learned 250,4346,43222.642 words and somehow it is not enough

Yep yep. I try to read non-graded reader novels and I'm looking up every 5th word or something. I had a new list made just from the words I'm learning from the novel 😞 I'm trying to focus on learning more kanji rn because at least sometimes I can guess the meanings of words, if not pronunciation

積読合宿

つんどくがっしゅく, tsundokugasshuku

Meaning: "tsundoku" is that word you see in untranslate-able word lists a lot, "buying books and not reading them"

"gasshuku" is a lodging house or training camp. You might know about 合宿免許, gasshukumenkyo, which is when someone stays at lodging provided by a driving school to take intensive driving lessons, often over the spring break period.

So 積ん読合宿, in this case, was used to mean "staying home and reading through my TBR pile"

I wonder why the word for reptiles は虫類 has the kanji for insect 虫 in it?

Oooh, pick me! *raises hand*

Because in ancient China they grouped everything like snakes and insects into 虫 without it really meaning "insect" but rather a garbage can term for anything not mammal, bird, or fish. So this has carried on through many other words, such as 爬虫類.

That's why you can write octopus (たこ) as 蛸 with the 虫 radical.
