10 things they don’t tell you about being/becoming disabled
1. You’re not going to immediately know your own limitations. It takes trial and error and sometimes A LOT of pain to figure out what you’re capable of and what you should or shouldnt do on a daily basis.
2. As unfortunate as it is, don’t expect professionals to take you and your symptoms seriously- esp if you’re female, POC, etc. This is where you have to learn to advocate for yourself and force their hand. And honestly if they’re not listening to you or your pain, then drop them!
3. The world isn’t always accessible and you have to learn to advocate for yourself. You deserve accomodations but it might be a struggle to get them. Use everything you can to get it, even taking advantage of having abled friends and family around so that they can support you.
4. You’re probably not going to have a diagnosis right away or ever. Doctors don’t actually have all the answers.
5. There is no such thing as disabled enough. Even if you dont use mobility devices often or at all, if you dont have a diagnosis, or you don’t think your struggle is real. If you’ve got an ailment that impacts your life then you can consider yourself disabled.
6. You don’t have to identify as disabled if you dont want to. It’s a label and like any other label, it helps in certain situations, and it hinders in others. It’s up to you whether or not you identity as disabled no matter what anyone else says about it. Most of the time, it isn’t that we have limitations, but that the world is not accommodating to people with different needs.
7. You don’t have to hate your illness or ailment. We don’t always like our symptoms, and sometimes we even hate some of them, but you’re not obligated to hate yourself and what you have just because the world feels you’re less than for it.
8. You don’t deserve pity, you deserve respect.
9. You’re not inspiration porn. You’re a human being with feelings and you shouldn’t let anyone make you feel like they don’t matter over abled people’s feeling or even someone else who is disabled.
10. You’re not alone. There’s an entire world of us disabled people out there and I can promise you that you’re not alone.
Feel free to add more!
You’re going to get caught in the gaps. Systems will always “forget” something, whether they be ones designed for abled people or for disabled people. That doesn’t make you lesser or a fraud.
You’re not required to talk to people about your disability, and you’re not a bad person for snapping at someone for asking; your private info isn’t something people can just ask about because they know you’re disabled.
In same vein, you’re also not a bad person for snapping (or even attacking tbh) anyone who grabs you / your mobility aids just because they “thought you need help”. You’re still a person with bodily autonomy, and it’s still a shitty thing for them to do.
