Since you like Midnight Cowboy and I’ve seen you love to watch movies….do you have any recommendations that are like Midnight Cowboy….or just recommendations in general?😋

Oh Boy Do I. I have a whole list of films I think could relate to MC in some way!

a lot of these movies i really like, but i’ll go into specifics for why I picked each one

Dog Day Afternoon: like Midnight Cowboy, this is a classic New Hollywood film set in New York, so you get that sort of grittiness there. It’s also a film that discusses social issues like MC does. people get really sweaty and stressed out in this. it’s a good movie

My Own Private Idaho: There’s nothing to directly confirm this, but I can definitely see MC being an influence on this film! Both films focus on a male prostitute who has issues regarding his past and his dynamic with another man, are fairly sad movies. There’s also some stylistic similarities with the use of flashbacks and imagery related to America. Mulholland Drive: Probably the least similar to MC out of all of these but there’s a surprising amount of overlap….I mean there’s technically a cowboy in both. And it’s about dreams that gradually turn into a nightmare which I think fits with MC. it’s my other favorite film so I’d highly recommend it

Mikey and Nicky: another New Hollywood film about two guys who aren’t like super great dudes that go around someplace. Like MC it’s very character focused and a bummer watch (complementary)

After Hours: a guy is stressed as all hell in New York. this has a lot of strange characters in it like how MC has some interesting side characters…though this one’s definitely more surreal/darkly comedic.

California Split: I’ve seen this once and don’t remember it super well…I think I added it to the list because it’s in the vein of “new hollywood film where two guys get up to stuff”

Paris, Texas: Like Midnight Cowboy, this film has a strong melancholic feeling and focus on loneliness. Also it’s very much a “road movie”, which I sorta feel like MC is as well. Bright Lights, Big City: Another film about a guy in New York and his adventures with his buddy. Like MC, the main guy in this one has some issues with his past and some…less than ideal coping mechanisms (in this case it’s drug usage instead of prostitution, but the sentiment still stands)
