amanda's relationship to spock is so fucking interesting cus she's presented as this beacon of light that tried and failed to save spock from the repressed life he grew into right, like she's the deliverer of emotional intelligence that would keep him alive in his childhood but she's not actually that emotionally intelligent she is just a human being living on vulcan so she was his only frame of reference. like she's very emotionally open but that doesn't mean she can understand the emotional needs of others and ends up actively harming spock and disregarding his needs when it comes down to it because he doesn't present emotionally in the same way as her. but no one sees it because she's the Nice Parent and so they may never have the chance to mend their relationship cus they don't know it's as much a problem as his relationship with sarek

spock grew up knowing he was loved by amanda and only found out sarek loved him after he was dead. he would be terrified to challange the way she raised him like what gives him the right? if sarek had raised him alone he probably would've killed himself a long time ago amanda's love is what allowed him to grow up. he could never admit even to himself that amanda was just as integral a part of the poison festering in his body for decades and slowly mutating him into this awkward untouchable thing

this family dynamic is such a good study in how love isn't what saves people it's what you do with it. like in a show thats central teaching is love does save you no it doesn't not always. it is stated as fact that both his parents love him, and it's true, and it doesn't fix anything because they used their love against him. when people come to terms with having been abused by their parents it's really hard to acknowledge love was involved because it often is but that's impossible to comprehend especially when everyone around u wants to use love as an excuse for abuse, or as a reason to demand u sympathise with your abuser, and so we usually switch to "that wasn't real love" but real love can damage people. real love is not some pure and stainless thing. a lot of abusive parents do Really Love their kids no matter how deep down or close to the surface and we're taught to think of Real Love as a thing that can never be twisted into a weapon but it's not true. love just like any other organic thing is subject to growing mold. anyway watch russian doll
