me, age 14: I want anatagonists that are morally gray, who donāt realize theyāre bad. They should be conflicted and have meaningful backstories.
me now: i want a villain that has āevilā listed every day on their calendars except sundays when they have mimosas with the protagonist
Again, Doofenshmirtz is the most perfect villain ever written.

part one
You read the second letter on your lunch break at school.
Y/N,
Iām sorry I havenāt been able to write recently. Not to sound like a super cool and buff superhero or anything, but the duties of being New Yorkās friendly crime fighter have caught up to me. Iāve saved many stolen bikes and runaway cat burglars but I canāt help but feel like I could be doing something more. When youāre able to do the things that I can, not doing them starts to eat you alive.
Sorry for pulling my first world superhero problems into the lines of this letter, I really am glad that I get to do what I do. My boss tells me Iām better off being the friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man than getting in with the big dogs, though. Whatever thatās supposed to mean.
I have a couple of friends at Midtown, actually. Peter Parker and Ned Leeds? Super cool guys. Especially Peter, Iāve even heard heās single. Ā I go to school too, but if I told you where Iād have to kill you! Okay, Iām only kidding about that part and now I feel bad for writing it.
Iāve actually heard thereās some school party, Ned invited me. I havenāt decided if I should go and I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Write back soon!
Sincerely,
Spider- Man
Your eyes scanned the cafeteria for the two mentioned in the scribbled handwriting. Ned was your lab partner in chemistry and you had only talked to his cute curly haired accomplice named Peter in class. You took a deep breath before gathering your things and heading to their table, tunnel vision on your goal ahead of you. They had to know that you were writing Spider-Man.
āY/N? At our lunch table?ā Ned waved at you nervously as Peter choked, apple juice spewing out of his nose as his eyes widened, āEverything good?ā
āYes. Peter, you okay?ā you asked with a nervous laugh as you sat next to Ned, Peter still coughing loudly in front of you. You hunched over and held the carefully folded notebook paper in your hands, watching Peterās bottom lip quiver as you placed it on the table, āI know,ā you said quietly.
Ned raised an eyebrow and turned to the next page in his book, āKnow what?ā Ā he and Peter exchanged a nervous glance before you rolled your eyes and read the closing of the friendly letter, āYou have a superhero pen-pal now? How does that involve us exactly?ā They both looked as if they had seen a ghost, their faces pale and sickly.
āAre you kidding me? This letter mentioned your names. He knows you two, how? Do I know who it is?ā you leaned over to get in Nedās face, an eyebrow raised as he stared at you with a blank expression.
He rolled his eyes, āYouāre crazy. Are you even sure that Spider-Man is the one writing these letters to you? Like, youāre not at all worried that it could be a catfish?ā
āI donāt think Spider-Man would lie to me,ā you said. Even as you said it, it felt weird slipping off of your tongue, no wonder they both looked at you like you sprouted a second head. Their eyes burned you until you turned red from embarrassment, āIāve gotta get to class. Are you guys going to Flashās party tonight?ā you asked with a shaky sigh.
Ned nodded, plastering a fake smile onto his face as he watched you turn the corner and disappear from view. āYou are not writing love letters to your crush as a superhero!ā Ned gaped at his best friend who had gone stark white as he sat there, gaze cast downward.
Peter groaned and picked up his lunch tray, āI didnāt plan on it, and theyāre not love letters!ā he scoffed. Even if he did like you, itās not like he meant for you and his super alter ego to become pen pals.
āY/Nās already getting too close to your secret, you need to keep a safe distance,ā Ned could only roll his eyes, a rock forming in his stomach. You had never spoken to the two of them outside of the classroom yet there you were, one step closer to Peterās secret than was comfortable for either of them.
Dear Spider-Man,
Itās nice to hear from you again, I was starting to worry that I made you up in my head. Being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is great, but I can understand where youāre coming from.
I always feel like that. I volunteer at the hospital and I teach kindergarteners but what else can I be doing? Iām sure itās not the same thing, you are a crime fighting superhero after all. I can understand the yearning for more, though.
I went up to your friends at lunch and they stared at me like I had grown an extra limb. Iām sure they were just protecting you, but Iām not sure why. Who are you? Will you ever be able to tell me?
I hope your day was better than mine, which was subpar at best. Iām going to try and have some fun at the party tonight and I hope you get this letter before then, maybe we can see each other again.
Thanks for listening to my word vomit of a letter, Spider-Man. Our letters feel like a safe haven that Iāve never had before. I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Y/N
You sighed loudly and slid the letter into a thick blue envelope with Spider-Man written in red glitter pen. Hopefully he would come by to collect his letter before the night was over.
Parties werenāt usually your scene. You were one better served at home either finishing homework or watching a movie in a blanket fort on your bed. Your heart was set a flutter at the thought of Spider-Man showing up to Flashās Friday night bash; would he be in his super suit glory or would he show his true identity?
āHey Y/N, you made it!ā Flash waved you down, a plastic cup full of alcohol in his hand, āIām surprised you came, actually. How many of these have I invited you to? Do you want a drink?ā you smiled nervously, graciously accepting a can of soda from a bucket of ice on the counter.
āGreat party,ā you said bitterly. Your eyes still hadnāt landed on the superhero you showed up for, perhaps he was a āno showā.
āOh, look. Y/Nās already been swept away by Flash, there goes your chance,ā Ned rolled his eyes at Peter as the two of them watched from afar. Flash leaned in to tell you a joke over the loud music which resulted in fits of laughter from you.
An emerald, envious cloud hovered over Peter as he watched the interaction, the tips of his ears burning red. You hadnāt even set eyes on him and Ned yet and there you were, smiling and laughing with Flash of all people.
Peter got up from his spot on the couch and took a final gulp of soda before grabbing his backpack, āIāll be right back,ā he announced, his heart beating out of his chest.
āYouāre not doing what I think youāre doing,ā Ned groaned. Peter turned and shrugged before slipping out of the glass doors onto the patio. The last thing Ned saw of Peter were his trainers as he jumped up onto the roof. He was doing what Ned thought; making a party appearance as Spider-Man.
āHey,ā you sat next to Ned on the sofa, grabbing a tortilla chip from the bowl in front of you, āI thought you came with Peter?ā
Ned chuckled and took a drink, āOh, heās here. I just donāt know where,ā it was easy for him to lie straight through his teeth when it involved his best friendās best kept secret, even if he was a terrible liar on most all occasions, āWhatāre you giggling with Flash about?ā
āNothing!ā you stifled your laughter with a salsa dipped tortilla chip, watching as Ned made a face and nodded, āCan I ask you something?ā you bit your lip, looking over at him with your head tilted in curiosity.
He nodded and took another swig from his soda can, an eyebrow raised. Ned had a feeling that it had something to do with Peterās secret so he expected the worst and hoped for the best.
āHow do you know-,ā your eyes narrowed as you watched a hefty black backpack drop onto the concrete with a loud thud. Only a couple other party goers noticed at first, turning their attention back to their conversations and games. You stared out at the patio for a moment, āDid you see that?ā
āWhat? No, that was nothing. How do I know who?ā Ned tried to pull your attention away from the backyard but you couldnāt look away. You watched as someoneā or somethingā jumped from the roof and landed in the darkness of the grassy hills, taking off in a run. What if it was the one person you came for?
You gulped and got to your feet, āIāll be right back,ā you told Ned. A lump formed in your throat, butterflies fluttering in your stomach. It had to be him.
He grabbed your arm, āYou canāt go out there! Thereās a, uh, a bear!ā Nedās eyes widened to the size of golf balls as he made up a story about how bad bears were in this part of town. Were you really supposed to believe that?
āItās Spider-Man, isnāt it?ā you asked, yanking your arm away as you crossed them over your chest, āWhy canāt you just accept that Iām actually conversing with the guy? You know what, I never shouldāve said anything,ā with a huff, you turned on your heel and took off to the patio where the heroās backpack lay in a heap. If you were paying attention that nightā if the heat of the situation hadnāt clouded your judgementā you couldāve recognized that tattered bag. Instead, you snatched it up without even glancing at it, tearing off down the hill.
Twigs were snapping under your feet as backyards turned to woods which turned to walking along the road, āHello? Spider-Man?ā you felt like you were in a scary movie; the moon lit everything in a hazy, ominous light and dogs barked at each other far away from Flashās neighborhood.
You stopped dead in your tracks when you came to a playground, gravel crunching under the soles of your tennis shoes. You could see him.
He was sitting atop the jungle gym, legs swinging and mask off as he yelled at someone on his phone, water dripping from his dark hair. If only he didnāt have his back to you, āHey!ā you called out, making him jump. He immediately put his mask back on, whipping around to face you with a web aimed at you, āItās just me.ā
āJeez, you scared me. What are you doing out here?ā You held his backpack out to him and watched as his shoulders relaxed and tensed again. āDid you, uh, did you look inside of it?ā
āNo, why would I do that?ā you laughed. Spider-Man let out a breath that he didnāt know that he was holding, reaching for his bag.
āWhat are you doing here? Itās freezing,ā he said, scooting over on the jungle gym to make room for you, āHow did you know it was me?ā
You scoffed and rolled your eyes, rubbing at your forearms to generate some heat to warm your body back up. It was an impossibly cold night in the middle of September, so much so that you were worried your red nose would freeze and snap off, āI just had an inkling that it was you. Plus, no normal person just decides to jump from the roof of a house and take off in a sprint to the nearby playground.ā
āYouāve got a point there,ā Spider-Man laughed, nodding his head. You noticed that he was soaking wet, small puddles of water collecting as his feet dangled from the jungle gym, āI went after something big tonight, Y/N. I went after it and I nearly drowned,ā the voice you heard wasnāt the confident, zealous voice from the cold months of winter but a small, defeated boy.
You wanted nothing more than to reach a hand out to him and tell him that it was going to be okay, but you didnāt know how. How could you really understand? āThe crazy thing is that you went after it, you did it. On top of it, you only nearly drowned. You couldāve but you didnāt!ā This left Spider-Man laughing next to you, nodding in agreement.
āThanks, Y/N. I love your optimism.ā
It was a simple compliment that caused your heart to pound and your palms to sweat. Suddenly, all you could think about was the fact that Spider-Man had just said that he loved something about you.
āIām sorry you had a subpar day, by the way. Peter and Ned can be real assholes when it comes to protecting my identity.ā
It was an obvious explanation, they were just looking out for their friend. Whomever it may be.
āThank you, itās not too bad anymore,ā you beamed, looking through your eyelashes at the masked superhero sitting next to you. āI understand that they want to protect you, and I hope that one day you can trust me enough to tell me who you really are.ā
The world faded away as you sat next to Spider-Man, his hand barely touching yours as the two of you stared out at the lake in front of you. The water shimmered and sparkled from the moonlight yet it also had an ominous, eerie feeling to it. You wouldnāt be caught dead in it at this hour; what lurks beneath? What had Spider-Man gotten himself into that nearly made him drown?
