another new magic book: scapegracers edition!
pro tip for keeping track of new releases: if you go to goodreads and click browse > new releases and go to the "my authors" tab, it will show you new releases by month for every author you've added to your shelf. Works for six months into the future and I think also retrospectively, although I don't use that function.
!!!
Actually an incredibly useful feature/thing to know! Tyvm.

Beloved fellow readers, may I have your attention for a moment, to beg a favor? 🥺🙏
For the magical readathon (orilium readathon) this semester, my (second) character needs to pass Restoration.
The prompt is to ask for five 5-star titles.
Please, rb and tell me (in the reblog post or in the tags) 5 books you've given 5-stars to?
My top 5 star books are: The Stars Too Fondly by Emily Hamilton (Sci-Fi, Sapphic) So, here's the thing: Cleo and her friends really, truly didn't mean to steal this spaceship.
They just wanted to know why, twenty years ago, the entire Providence crew vanished without a trace. But then the stupid dark matter engine started all on its own, and now these four twenty-somethings are en route to Proxima Centauri, unable to turn around, and being harangued by a snarky hologram that has the face and attitude of the ship's missing captain, Billie.
Cleo has dreamt of being an astronaut all her life, and Earth is kind of a lost cause at this point, so this should be one of those blessings in disguise people talk about. But as the ship gets deeper into space, the laws of physics start twisting, old mysteries start crawling back to life, and Cleo's initially combative relationship with Billie turns into something deeper and more desperate than either woman is prepared for.
Astrid Parker Doesn't Fail by Ashley Herring Blake (Romance, Sapphic) For Astrid Parker, failure is unacceptable. Ever since she broke up with her fiancé a year ago, she’s been focused on her career—her friends might say she’s obsessed, but she’s just driven. When Pru Everwood asks her to be the designer for the Everwood Inn’s renovation that will be broadcasted on a popular home improvement show, Innside America, Astrid knows this is the answer to everything that is wrong with her life. It’ll be the perfect distraction from her failed love life, and her perpetually displeased mother might finally give her nod of approval.
However, Astrid never planned on Jordan Everwood, Pru’s granddaughter and lead carpenter for the inn’s renovation, who despises every modern design decision Astrid makes. Jordan is determined to preserve the history of her family’s inn, particularly as the rest of her life is in shambles. When that determination turns into a little light sabotage, ruffling Astrid’s perfect little feathers, the showrunners ask them to play up the tension. But somewhere along the way, their dislike for each other turns into something quite different, and Astrid must decide what success truly means. Is she going to pursue the life that she’s expected to lead, or the one she wants?
The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden (Historical, Sapphic) It's 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is well and truly over. Living alone in her late mother's country home, Isabel's life is as it should be: led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis delivers his graceless new girlfriend, Eva, at Isabel's doorstep-as a guest, there to stay for the season...
Eva is Isabel's antithesis: sleeps late, wakes late, walks loudly through the house and touches things she shouldn't. In response Isabel develops a fury-fuelled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house-a spoon, a knife, a bowl-Isabel' suspicions spiral out of control. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel's paranoia gives way to desire - leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva - nor the house in which they live - are what they seem.
The Glass Key by Amanda Geard (Historical TBR: 18 Jun 26) In Ireland, Maggie has grown up hearing her mother tell her the bedtime story of The Glass Key. It's a Nordic fairytale passed down by Maggie's grandmother Anna Swan, who mysteriously left her home one stormy night years ago, never to return. Now Maggie's grandfather has died and going through his things, Maggie is shocked to discover a faded wartime letter, asking him to take in a baby. In that moment she realises that Anna Swan was a woman of many secrets.
Only by travelling to Norway and discovering the story of four brave young women whose lives were forever changed by the occupation of their tiny islands, can Maggie uncover the shocking truth about her family - and finally unlock the mystery of the glass key... Pennies for Hitler by Jackie French (YA) It′s 1939, and for Georg, son of an English academic living in Germany, life is full of cream cakes and loving parents. It is also a time when his teacher measures the pupils′ heads to see which of them have the most ′Aryan′- shaped heads. But when a university graduation ceremony turns into a pro-Nazi demonstration, Georg is smuggled out of Germany to war-torn London and then across enemy seas to Australia where he must forget his past and who he is in order to survive.
Hatred is contagious, but Georg finds that kindness can be, too.
Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually don’t think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you can’t point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.

The Glass Key by Amanda Geard - 5 Stars
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this wonderful book. Thank you to Amanda Geard for writing such a beautiful and lovely story. The Glass Key is a beautiful story set in both Norway and Ireland. When Atticus Swan passes away, Hellebore House is left to his daughter, Freja, who wants to sell it due to childhood memories. Freja's daughter Maggie doesn't want her mother to sell, and while she's helping pack up her grandfather's house, she digs deeper into the story of her grandmother, Anna Swan, who left Freja when she was young. In 1940's Norway, Astrid arrives in the archipelago to start a new life as a teacher's assistant. From there she meets Gudrun, Lief, Liv, and Nina. They become friends over time and when the German's come, everything changes and so do their relationships. They face hardships under German rule while keeping their Norwegian pride but things break under pressure. This story captivated me from the very beginning. Seeing Maggie slowly piece together her family history that's full of secrets and finding the next lead kept me wanting to know more and more. Maggie's relationship with her parents was loving and she only wanted the best for her mum, and she wanted her to know the truth about what happened to her mother all those years ago. In Norway, the story of Liv, Astrid, and Nina and how they helped the war while going through such hardships had me reading until 5:00am. The story and relationship between Astrid and Nina was beautiful and full of so much love. It was gripping, sad, and utterly beautiful. They were devoted to each other and their story together was my favourite part of the book. This book is one of the best books I've read in a while. Amanda Geard knows how to write a book, and every book of hers I have devoured. She's honestly one of my favourite authors, and she's Australian!

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong
3.5 ⭐⭐⭐½
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a story in the form of letters from the character, Little Dog, to his mother. The book is separated into three parts. Part 1 put you in the moment, it held my attention, and the prose it used was beautiful. The family dynamics and how they grew together to try and function as a family was overshadowed by C-PTSD moments from his mother where certain sounds like fireworks and guns firing sent her into a panic leaving Little Dog not knowing what to do. His grandmother was a wiser older woman and was the glue that kept that small unit of family together. Part 2 gives you a sense that Little Dog is venturing out more and gets his first job underage. This is where he meets Trevor. I didn't like Trevor as a character, he used Little Dog for his own needs and barely reciprocated. He also got Little Dog to do drugs with him that led them to do reckless things together. Part 3 is where you find out a few people in the area have died from overdoses. It's about Little Dog living through the pain of losing people he knew and trying to become a better person. He helps his family still, he loves them, but when more characters die he's hit harder. The family go to their American grandfather's house and he makes the some beautiful. It's here Little Dog learns names of flowers. It's also the part of the book where he realises that even if he was told he was born from war, he was actually born from beauty, and this changes his perspective on how he now views the world. Overall, I really enjoyed parts 1 and 3. Part 2 was okay as it connected some of the stories together in the end. I really enjoyed reading this book, and if you're into stories told through letters from a boy to his mother, you'd really like this.
I know a lot of librarians follow me, so I want them all to know that they are awesome, and I have deep respect for all that you do. 💞
