It's been a while since I've updated my tumblr; happy new year. I got sucked into BTS hell. (As per usual with my traditional stuff, it's all been drawn in my pen-sketchbook, where the rules are, no pencils, no erasing.)

i haven't drawn in months so iβm giving myself permission to draw badly. and then forcing myself to post the results...
With another year as an ALT quickly drawing to an end, I've been thinking about this a lot. So I've put together a long, (pretentious probably) list I originally posted on Facebook. Things my students have taught me: That my perceptions of what a happy and satisfying life is, only apply to me. So that when a student says their dream is to work in a retail job/eventually own a retail store, and they genuinely, passionately want that dream. Thinking "but you can do so much more/be so much better." Is insulting. Instead, think "okay, how can I help you be prepared to achieve that dream?" That students who misbehave do so for a reason; and once you understand that reason it's easier to be sympathetic to the behaviour. Passing or failing a test isn't always the most pressing concern in your students lives, and berating them for a lack of effort in a class when unbeknownst to you their world is falling apart around them; is only adding to their anger and frustrations, and will only push them to misbehave more. That praising someone can have a huge impact on their lives. Especially when you are young. Grades are not the only measure of success; your students have individual talents and strengths in your subject, and praising them/noticing them, will always improve their confidence, self worth and sense of belonging in the classroom. That life isn't fair, and it isn't just. Some students will be forced to deal with stuff that no child ever should. Because life isn't fair, your classroom should be. That being fair does not mean treating everyone the same. Being fair is giving students the attention and assistance they need, and how much that is, is different for every child. That I'm not smarter than my students. That I'm not better than my students. That all I have over my students is 13 more years of being alive. That puberty is hard, and growing up is harder. The stuff that doesn't matter as an adult, was my whole world as a teenager. It's easy to be frustrated by students who refuse to take class work seriously, who care more about what the opposite sex thinks about them and less about their futures. But it's also so easy to forget at 28, what it felt like to be 13. That true learning happens in small, almost magical moments. That students are the best teachers. That a teacher who stands in front of the class, and makes every lesson about what they know, what they have to say, and what they want to do; is a narcissist. A classroom should be a democracy, not a dictatorship. The most effective lessons happen when you give students control. Let them choose the topic. Let them choose the project. Let them work together. Let them express themselves. Be there to guide them. Encourage them to push themselves further. Encourage them to help each other. Teaching and learning is a collaborative effort.
Circle labels are my new favourite things everrrrrr

my tablet finally came back from repairs, and iβm so rusty.
Pen sketching dump; a lot of screen cap and comic panel redraws. I'm trying to get back into drawing properly again.

Today marks 5 years since the Great Tohoku Earthquake, Tsunami, and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant disaster.
Today was also the graduation ceremony for my third year kids that I have been teaching here in Fukushima since I came here nearly three years ago.
To say today was an emotional day would be a ridiculous joke of an understatement. η¦ε³Άγε₯½γγ
Today we did fun times shopping role play lesson again. My second years are so oshare it hurts. How to; Lesson one; we went over Speaking+4 in the new horizon 2nd year text book, checked meaning, practiced pronunciation, etc. then for the last 15 minutes, we handed out clothing to each group of 4 and let them go to town decorating the clothes. (This works best if each group has different items of clothing; one group has jeans, one has jackets, one has t-shirts, etc; and the additional smaller items (scarf/bag/shoes) are handed out to groups with more members etc) if they ran out of time, home work! Lesson two; students bring their wonderful creations to class, and each group decides the prices of their items. Whilst they do this, teachers hand out the paper with their model, and an envelope with 20,000yen in play money. Students decide who will be shop keepers and who will be customers. (Group of four = 2 of each) and then you can start shopping time. (You can also either let them carry their text books with them/prepare a dialogue sheet, if you think it's needed) Customers go out to other groups to collect items to make an awesome outfit, shop keepers sell their items; any money earned can be used to buy more clothing. Once students have finished purchasing their outfit they can neatly cut out their chosen clothing (if they haven't already) and glue them to their model. The lesson is concluded by each group hanging their model on the black board and the class voting for their favourite.

I saw the new Star Wars today, and was utterly delighted to see John Boyega in such a big role; so nostalgia repost of some old Attack the Block art.
ζΎζγγγ is my favourite day of the year. I was placed in this town randomly by the JET Program, three years ago, and I have long since fallen heart wrenchingly in love with it. This is something my town has done for 426 years, to remember those lost when Date Masamune had our towns castle burnt down. Last night standing with my students in the rain in 10Β° weather, we watched and cheered together as the taimatsu were lit and burnt to the ground. They had worked hard together for 9 hours straight building their taimatsu, and our student council president overcame his fear of heights to scale a ten meter ladder and light it amid a field of 30 burning pillars. I will always have a lot of love for my school of troubled kids, but I could not be more proud of how they worked together, included everyone, and cheered on their captain as our taimatsu refused to light in the rain and he was stuck up the ladder waiting for new torch after new torch to be handed up to him from below.
