And that's very depressing if he was right all along and people didn't believe him, but his life has changed forever, forcing this won't make things better, he needs to heal and think of the future instead of holding on to things that make him feel worse. And that's hard.

Asgore is desperate to prove he isn’t at fault for what happened, he wants to prove he is trying to protect everyone. These are also his own words. Toriel doesn’t want to hear him out at this point let alone be near him. Imagine what that dynamic was like when they were still married. Asgore not dropping the issue, thinking that if he just explains well enough it will all be fixed. Toriel doesn’t want to engage with Asgore’s explanation and just wants it to stop. Maybe Asgore gets heated at one point and says some things he doesn’t actually feel.

Last chapter ended on Toriel on a date with another man. Certainly the chapter with the fields of pink and gold wont be about a stubborn man trapped in asylum scorching them to the ground out of jealousy.
