The documentary Leaving Neverland has effectively been buried from public view. The estate couldn't stop the 2019 release, but they brought a case which dragged on until a 2024 settlement, after which HBO agreed to remove the documentary from its platform. This resulted in its removal from HBO and its current unavailability in the U.S.

The estate leveraged an old contract to suppress the film’s distribution. They made a biopic Michael to gain momentum and keep the documentary from public view.

There is a sequel called Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson which is available for free on YouTube in the U.S. because HBO declined to air it.

Suppressing the doc is a long‑standing strategy of the Jackson estate to defend Jackson’s public image by trying to keep survivor's stories from the public.

HBO retains the license until 2029, after which the director says he intends to redistribute it independently. I hope that happens so survivors can be believed.
