Mr. Jonathan Demme. RIP. You were one of my creative heros. From Caged Heat to Swing Shift...The BRILLIANCE and LIFE you created in the beauty of Talking Heads’ STOP MAKING SENSE, a concert film, remains embedded in my mind. I was 8 years old when I saw that concert film and it was life-changing. It gave me wings and ambition to see the music, feel the close ups and intimacy of your framing. As I reached adolescence, my peers and I became OBSESSED with SOMETHING WILD. Melanie Griffith and the brilliant Ray Liotta. You put Iggy Pop and X into the soundtrack. Gave us sex symbols, embraced camp, and an alternative to the robotic, synthesizer-based soundtrack of the mid-80s. Not to mention videos for bands such as New Order. Cut to 1990...Silence of the Lambs. More close-ups, Q Lazarus, casting Chris Isaac, and character actor Charles Napier. The film won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress at the Oscars. You made Philadelphia, Beloved, The Truth About Charlie, and the sublime Rachel Getting married. Thank you for your brilliance.

Coachella from home 2017
Watching day one from the comfort of our home. 3 channels. It seems like forever and a day that I was a regular at Coachella. 10 years in a row. I’m such a fan. But now, with a family, a little girl, it’s really hard to be out there. Priorities. So happy to be able to engage with Twitter and enjoy bands I’m discovering such as Broods, Oh Wonder, and Glass Animals

Statistics Success! A story from my life
A few years ago, I needed to enroll and successfully pass a statistics course as a transferable math requirement to University. As a returning student to college (after almost 20 years) I unsuccessfully attempted to take the course two times within a one year period-Fall 2012 and Spring 2013. Needless to say, I’ve never been the most dedicated of math scholars, but, stepping outside of myself, there were other factors involved that contributed to the hindrance of my success (both times).
You see, major life changes had occurred. Beginning with a new job as marketing director at Plaza Mexico, a new relationship which led to an engagement, elopement, and the birth of my daughter Anais. All this was occurring during this time. Needless to say, I ended up withdrawing from Statistics class during the Fall AND Spring quarters at LACC. The instructors for the courses seemed engaged but were not the most flexible and approachable. I withdrew from them and actually only returned to LACC as an online student taking a Business Law class (I got an A).
I was disappointed in myself because I set myself up for failure. I gave myself an exit, but also did not face the fact that I was in over my head. Perhaps I needed some time to reflect and think about my environment and how I could best support those around me first. Family and job were priority, I’d have to put the class on the back burner for now.
One year later, I found myself with a new job as the Business Development Manager at Caremore. I was much happier in that role and it was a new new beginning for me. I decided to change city colleges and enrolled at LA Trade Technical College and try Stats once more. It was closer to home, I did better research on the professor, and the class was in the evenings. Although my family responsibilities were still paramount, I was able to come how by no later than 8p twice a week. I approached this course with an open mind and it also embraced me. The professor was from southeast Asia (I believe Indian) and she was very nice and sincere in her delivery of the course materials. It was also a fun class to be in, I sat in the front row, engage often and asked many questions. I studied in the evenings, did my homework consistently, and approached the subject in a non-mathematical way. Applying real world scenarios and critical thinking techniques to the tasks and projects at hand. The professor also took the time to do study groups with us and show a humanistic approach to her teaching. She wasn’t ostentatious and helped all who sought her guidance. As the semester progressed, I collaborated with classmates and had a great time in the class. I was able to complete the course at Trade Tech and I ended up getting an A in the class!
