Insomniacs - Wanda and Steve
If anyone could possibly understand what he was talking about, it was her. Even when she still had her brother, stuck in a cell, far away from him, she’d been alone, with no other option other than, well, suffering by herself. Just having company, someone to listen to her talk and to talk with as well, even if about the simplest of topics, it helped more than he could ever imagine.
“Most people would even be afraid to be in the same room as me. Much less sitting down on the same couch, you know.” Wanda points out with a small shake of her head, expression clearly baffled as he spoke. Most were afraid of her, even those in her team, though she could see that it was slowly changing into a more comfortable relationship between all of them. “Your company is not bad either, Captain.”
“I guess I’m not most people, then.” Steve could tell Wanda was baffled, but everything he was saying was true. The first Avengers had been a travesty as a team, and none of them had really gotten along. Steve didn’t want to make that same mistake with this new team, and he wanted to do the best he could to take care of all of its members.
“I’m glad my company’s okay.” Steve turned to give her a faint smile, finally beginning to relax a little. “Even if I’m a boring old guy.” He hoped the joke didn’t fall too flat, but the kind of humor he seemed to be best at was usually self-deprecating.
A small laugh escapes her as her brows furrow, eyes cast down at herself as well as she could. “I am not sure about it looking better, but it is certainly more comfortable.” Wanda reinstates with a grin. “It smells like you, too. Not in a weird way.” She quickly stated with wide eyes. “I don’t know how to explain it. Everyone has a smell characteristic to them, you know. Like—Natasha. She smells like gunpowder and vanilla, Sam smells like fresh air and strawberries—I promise it didn’t sound as weird in my head.”
Steve laughs a little when she mentions everyone’s scents, surprised that people pick up on things like that. He had never paid too much attention to it - but then again, he hadn’t been physically close to anyone in a long while, except for maybe the undercover kiss he had shared with Natasha.
“What do I smell like, then? I hope it’s good.”
Regina let out a bark of sharp, humorless laughter. “You must have lived a good life if you think that,” she observed bluntly. There was no malice in her tone but she felt a pang of jealousy; she wished she could love her son the way he needed her to.
“You were a famous hero,” she stated. “Your family’s fate was probably recorded in different versions of the text.”
Steve’s face was sad when he looked at Regina again, both for her sake and his own. He couldn’t say his life had been good - not until meeting Peggy, at least. But now she was gone, and he had to pick up the pieces and try to figure out why his life was worth it.
“Maybe. I don’t know.” Steve shrugged a little. There was a small part of him that didn’t want to know, but he knew he could never rest if he didn’t find closure. “And who says if any of that’s true?”
On the Road - Steve and Natasha
They had traveled a fair amount of distance while she left Steve to his thoughts. It wasn’t that she was speeding, the last thing they eeded was a traffic ticket. The whole world knew who she was, Natasha didn’t have any covers to hide behind. And she figured it wouldn’t look good if captain America got a ticket. Her lips twitched at the thought. He did steal a car.
Her eyebrow quirks, and her lips pull into a bit wider of a grin. “I don’t even want to think about how many pancakes two super soldier can eat.”
That makes Steve laugh, a genuine smile appearing on his face for the first time in a while. He’s glad Natasha can lift the mood a little, since he seems to be a constant angst fest, himself.
“I think we’d probably empty an entire IHOP. If we ever go out for pancakes, we should call them so they can prepare,” Steve jokes, quirking a grin at Natasha. “One stack of pancakes just isn’t enough.”

Awakenings - Steve and Peggy
Peggy, feeling his arm going around her shoulders, let out a rather content sigh and leaned against him, her own arms going around his waist. It was still so surreal, holding him like this. No war, no Hydra, no… threats breathing down their necks. It was a bloody miracle, and it wasn’t one she would ever take for granted.
“Killer robot? Christ, I thought those things only existed in films.” She laughed quietly, but when she heard Steve’s rather deadpanned chuckle it made her frown. How serious had it been? What exactly had happened? Another conversation for another time, she thought for a moment, listening to him explain his new teammates. “Goodness… they sound like quite the bunch. They all know I’m here? I certainly hope they’ll wait until I’m healed and rested fully to meet me. Otherwise I’m afraid I’d be a terrible disappointment.”
Biting the inside of her cheek, she looked up at him almost anxiously. “So… the other Commandos? Howard? Is anyone still…” though she knew better than most the agony he’d gone through when James had died, Peggy didn’t know what waking up alone in the future had done to him. She had the comfort of him, but their friends? People they had grown so close to during that time… they were all older, if not gone and buried.
Steve sighed softly when he felt Peggy’s arms around his waist, and he turned the stove down for a moment, wanting just to be held by her. He wrapped his arms around her in turn, pulling her close.
“I did too. Until Stark decided to act on his paranoia and try to make one to protect the world. It didn’t end well.” Steve managed another weak laugh, although he cringed a little, remembering Ultron. That had been an entirely preventable disaster, and he doubted he’d ever forgive Tony - and Bruce, for going right along with him - for it. “We can have them wait to meet you, until you’re fully recover. Besides - “ He leaned down to kiss Peggy’s hair. “Right now, I want you all to myself.”
His smile faded when she asked about Howard and the rest of the Commandos, and he hesitated, hating that he had to break this to her. “Most of them are gone. Howard died in a car crash.” He hesitated again, the pain of seeing what had been done to Bucky all too fresh in his mind. “And Bucky...he’s alive. But he’s been through a lot of horrible things to get here, because of Hydra. We’re looking for him.”
“He’s probably better off without me,” she said softly. “He deserves a family who can love him properly. I’ve never been able to love anyone properly.” She almost envied his fate; she had the small, dangerous glimmer of hope that would keep her in agony forever. At least he knew there was no chance. But…
“I would like to help you,” she told him, looking up at him. “I don’t know what I can do, but I can see if I can give you answers.” She needed something to focus on and maybe giving Steve some closure could help her.
Steve frowned a little. “Everyone is capable of love.” Regina was angry and sad, but she didn’t seem like the type to abuse someone. He knew how it felt to need to lash out like her, and he got the impression it wasn’t out of a desire to be malicious. Regina was in a lot of pain, just like he was.
“...thank you.” Steve’s expression softened a little, and he gave her a grateful look. “I’m not sure if there are any answers to find, but I appreciate it. Any closure would be better than nothing.”
Peggy couldn’t refuse when he offered half of the cupcake, eating it carefully so as not to get crumbs all over the bed. “Mm– anything to see you dressed up, darling. You’ve got me sold on the idea.” She teased, covering her mouth to hide her chewing. “But Steve… you look good in everything, and you can’t blame a girl for staring for extended moments when you’re done up in your far-too-tight athletic wear.”
Once she was finished with her half of the cupcake, a soft laugh escaped and she moved to innocently straddle his lap, resting her hands on his cheeks. “I didn’t think you would.” Peggy teased, gaze roaming over his ruffled bed hair and his flushed cheeks. “Have you ever thought about moving out? Getting a proper place to stay?”
Steve blushed when she mentioned how tight his clothes tended to be, and he scratched his head, embarrassed. He blushed further once she straddled him, glad he was finished with the cupcake by now. It was hard to concentrate on what Peggy was saying while she was in his lap, and he hoped he wasn’t doing that full body blush thing again.
“Nah, not really. I have duties here,” Steve said. “And I’m sure it’d be a nightmare commute.” He laughed a little. He wished he could have a peaceful life alone with Peggy, but the world needed him and his team. He knew Peggy understood that, and he was grateful she stayed with him anyway.
On the Road - Steve and Natasha
“Pancakes,” she breathed, and closed her eyes, maybe a little bit longer than she should have given that she was driving, Green eyes opened a moment later, and she tilted her head to catch Steve’s profile, her expression soft, relaxed, and for all intents and purposes, unguarded. There kitchen would more than likely be stocked with instant pancakes.
But she saw the shift, what looked like sorrow in his eyes, and Natasha let him to it. She wouldn’t let him wallow in it for too long, but every once in a while, you hast had to grieve.
It was a while before Steve spoke again, and he was grateful that Natasha let him gather himself. He still had a hunch that Natasha might have more of a history with Bucky than she was letting on, although he felt like it would be inappropriate to ask about it.
“So once we find him, and if he wants to come with us, I want to make him pancakes. Just like old times. Kind of.” He managed a weak laugh, although the sound was a little humorless.

Insomniacs - Wanda and Steve
An amused look crosses her features at his words. “I am not much of a dancer either.” Wanda admits with a shake of her head. “I remember vaguely dancing with my father in the living room as we listened to the radio. It was childs play, you know, nothing much, but my brother would take the lead when my father danced with my mother. But I barely remember it—it was more than ten years ago.”
Her brows furrow at his answer to her offer, and it’s done in pure confusion. “I have been like this for a while now, Steve. I have grown used to it.” It wasn’t as if she got much sleep in the first place even when she did manage to grow tired enough to do so. “I do not mind. It makes me feel useful, you know? Like I have something to offer beyond chaos and destruction.”
Steve’s expression softens as he looks at her, knowing all too well how memories like that felt. They were bittersweet, but he didn’t ever want to be without them.
“I know, but I still feel bad. Suffering alone isn’t something I’d wish on anyone.” Steve wished he could make things easier for Wanda, and although he knew he couldn’t do much, he hoped his company helped, at least. “You offer more than chaos and destruction, regardless. Right now, you’re giving me company. And I enjoy your company.”
Wanda’s brows furrow as he speaks, eyes lowering to look at herself before they flicker to look at his chest and his shoulders. While it was quite large on her, she could understand how it might be far tighter on him. “Right—I think I remember seeing you wearing this.” Not that she hadn’t enjoyed the view, but she wasn’t about to tell him that. “I am officially relieving you of shirt wearing duty because I might keep this one.”
Steve definitely notices her check out his chest, and he blushes a little. He hopes she won’t notice, though. “That’s fine with me. I think you probably look better in it anyway.” He laughs a little, embarrassed at how tight the shirt usually is on him.
Insomniacs - Wanda and Steve
“Anything but Stark—I can work with that.” She replies with a smile, nodding faintly before falling silent in thought. The topics were many and she wasn’t sure where to go, though she figured anything was a good starting point. “Natasha showed me a game yesterday—Just Dance? She is very good at it. Have you ever played or seen her playing?” The woman had lasted three songs without stopping for a break, meanwhile, Wanda had been out of breath by the end of the first half of the first song. Talk about endurance.
“I would offer to help you with that, but I do not think you would accept it.” The offer to help suppress the nightmares, even if just for a night, both to him and the others on her team, had crossed her mind more often than not. But after what she pulled in Africa, Wanda doubted they’d want her poking inside their heads.
“She’s been trying to get me to play that, actually.” Steve laughed a little. “I’m afraid I’m not much of a modern dancer, though.” His eyes looked faraway for a second, thoughts of Peggy flashing briefly through his mind. “I might step on my own feet.”
“You’re right, I wouldn’t accept it. But only because it’s not fair, if you’re still kept up with nightmares and can’t do anything about it. I’d feel bad.” Steve wasn’t sure why Wanda couldn’t use her powers on herself, but powers were strange things. “I wouldn’t want you to suffer through that alone.”
The mug was nearly reaching her lips once more before she hastily lowers it to answer him. “No, no. I have warm clothes. Natasha took me shopping last week and helped pick some clothes to last me a while. Most of it is just washing and the warmest I have is in the dryer.” Wanda stated with a light shrug. “I saw yours on the back of the couch and hoped you wouldn’t mind. It is very comfortable, if it is of any consolation.” She added with a quirk of her lips.
“All right, if you’re sure.” Steve gave her a faint smile when she mentioned the shirt was comfortable. “I’m glad it’s comfortable for you. It’s a little tight on me though, to be honest.” He laughed a little, amused at how the shirt dwarfed Wanda in comparison to how it fit snugly against his chest.

Red let out a soft, relieved sigh. He was starting to open up to her and that meant that they could start making progress. “You didn’t,” she said confidently. “Wolf nose, remember? All you did was run through the forest in a panic. You didn’t even hurt an animal. There was no scent of blood on you when I found you and… believe me, if there was, I would’ve smelled it.” She thought back to her own early days as a wolf and the hunters she had slaughtered. While she knew that it had been at least partially in self defense, the sheer brutality of it told her that she had enjoyed murdering people who were simply trying to keep their people safe. Their deaths weighed heavily on her conscience and she was determined to make sure that Steve never had to deal with that sort of guilt.
Steve felt a wave of relief at Red’s words, trusting that she wouldn’t lie to him about something that important. He hadn’t had blood on his hands when he had woken up, so he really hoped she was correct. “Good. That’s a relief, at least.” He finished the rabbit, still feeling a little shaky. “...you said you could help me control it, next time it happens? I feel like I only didn’t hurt anyone this time because I got lucky.”
“Good, besides, this cupcake looks rather delicious.” Peggy smiled, letting out a small sigh as Steve kissed her hair. She rather liked the idea of dinner, and fireworks, of course. “A proper date, hm? You just want to give me an excuse to gussy up for you, right?” She teased when he looked up at him, brushing her nose across his jaw.
“That sounds perfect though, darling. But I warn you, don’t get dressed up too nice and I may have to keep you home.” She was teasing of course, but Peggy was just trying to get him to blush like he always did– she thought it was possibly the cutest thing about him. The fact that she could always get him blushing.
Steve began to eat the cupcake, offering her half of it. He blushed when he felt her nose against his jaw, always a little flustered by her gentle touches. “Well. I’d be getting all dressed up nice for you, too. You mostly see me in a T shirt and athletic-wear these days. I’d like to wear something a little fancier.”
Her next comment made him blush, and he reached his hand up to scratch his hair briefly, embarrassed. “I - I wouldn’t mind that either. At all.”
