“I don’t know, Maria,” Steve shrugs his shoulders hard as his arms sink into their typical crossed position. Maria furrows her eyebrows but doesn’t say anything else, waiting for him to continue. “I wasn’t trying to push one way or another, but I don’t think it came off that way. I just want her to work on the powers, get them mastered the way I know she can. I’ve seen her with control, I’ve seen what she can do with them, and she’s not doing it now. I just... I think she may believe I secretly resent her and her powers. And I’m worried that she could be right.” He scratches at an eyebrow and gives Maria an apologetic look, because it’s a horrid thought and he knows it.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Rogers,” Maria counters just as quickly as she can. The concern is gone and in its place is irritation. “You remember what you told me when we first encountered the two of them?” She waits, but only long enough for him to nod. “If anybody understands their abilities, it’s you. Even knowing what they could do, you told me - you reminded me that they had good reason, and that it was what any good man would do. You remember that?”
He gives her a sardonic look. “Not in so many words,” he mutters, but doesn’t deny it.
