If you want to start spotting constellations, an easy first one to locate is Orion! It's really easy to find Betelgeuse because it's one of the brightest stars and SUPER warm compared to most stars! You can see it in the top left. Rigel, in the bottom right, is also very bright and therefore easy to see. Once you spot those stars all you need to do is spot the belt to know you have the right stars!!
Also, there's a common misconception that Betelgeuse is pronounced like "beetlejuice" but it's actually pronounced more like "bay-dull-guys!" Betelgeuse is also near the end of its lifespan, so it's possible we might see it go supernova in the next few years! The star is about 642 light years away, so if it does explode let's say tommorow, it ACTUALLY exploded 600 something years ago and the light is just reaching us now!! Once it goes supernova, it'll be so bright we'll be able to see it during the day for possibly MONTHS!! Isn't that wild?
There's this really cool app called Star Walk that everybody should check out! It uses your location to display all of the stars and constellations near you! It's so fun to use because you can even see things below the horizon since it's transparent. There's a free version I think but the Pro version is worth the buy in my opinion!
Did you know that there's an entire type of star that's theorized to exist but we have no evidence that it actually does?? They're called black dwarfs! They're what's theorized to occur once a white dwarf stops emitting heat. For reference, think of a white dwarf as a burner on a stove! The heat has been turned off already but it will take a bit for the burner to actually cool because of the residual heat. That's what a white dwarf is: it's not actively producing any more heat, it's like a turned off burner!! We think that once a white dwarf runs out of energy it'll turn into a black dwarf. That process would take so long though that none actually EXIST yet!! Isn't that crazy?? The universe is billions of years old but all of the white dwarfs are still producing heat!!
