Dogs mark their territory by leaving their sent. Vacuum cleaners clean pet hair and other dirt from the house, probably damping the dogs sent mark and claiming the territory for its self. Therefore, dogs are scared of vacuum cleaners because vacuum cleaners are the alfa males.
