Petroglyphs withstanding the erosion of time.
From National Geographic documentary "The Great Mojave Desert," 1971.
"Time was when this was a region of trees and shrubs, when the wind was cool and wet, when game was plentiful and water abundant. Hidden in the heart of the Mohave is a land with a Shoshone name suggesting fire, "Koso."
Here etched on basaltic lava is the last testament of a vanished people yet, called petroglyphs, these drawings are relics of a culture lost to the desert within the last thousand years, yet there is no living memory of who made them, or why, there is only speculation.
For thousands of years anthropologists believe a prehistoric people hunted here, and the bighorn sheep was their primary prey. In time the sheep population was diminished, interpreters contend the drawings were made for magic to bring luck for the hunt, or perhaps as a charm to prevent the final disappearance of the sheep."
