Russell house tavern - butternut squash
I was lucky enough to spend some time last evening with my dearest and closest friend in the world, Christina. we met at the warmth of the bar of the Russell house tavern in Harvard square. the warmth of both her friendship and the restaurant itself was much needed, because I can't really completely zip up my coat due to the bulkiness of my cast. so shout outs to both Christina and RHT for warming the cockles of my heart. dunno if I spelled that wrong.
anyway, we got butternut squash soup, the only soup on the menu. if you ask me, it's the only soup they need on the menu (although, to be fair, it wouldn't do them any harm to add a soup du jour to the menu. variety is the spice of life, after all). it was quiet in the restaurant when we arrived, because it was only 5:30, though it was starting to get bustling as we departed. overall a nice experience and I got this drink called a "solar sour," which was delicious and had a nice frothy/creamy texture due to the egg whites.
the soup: it was delectable. a savory dish with a sweet finish, its bouquet only amplified by the chopped apples on top. it was very thick, and not watery at all. to quote Christina, "it's like an adult baby food." indeed, I would have suckled at the test of RHT all night long if I had more energy and one less broken arm. we were supposed to go get French onion soup at cafe sausage today, but.i was too lazy. sorry.
inclusion of bread: 0/5 (no bread)
availability: 10/10, the soup came out faster than the burren. and RHT is right off the red line in Harvard sq. plus, its way better than the shittiest grocery store of all time, bfresh in Davis Square, somerville.
vibe: started at 7/10, ended at 6/10. it was kinda weird vibes in there to begin with, music-wise. plus as we enjoyed our soup it started to fill up with Harvard people. but, we sat at the bar. the lower level, from what I remember, is much chiller but also somewhat fancier. I guess they have a little something for every yuppie.
soup rating: solid 7.5/10. I'm hampered by my overall 'bleh' at buttnut soup.
summation: even though I don't love buttnut as much as other people, it was still really good.
I know there is a finger in the picture but it was so sumptuous I couldn't wait to dig in
