The tail of a 99-million-year-old dinosaur, including bones, soft tissue, and even feathers, has been found preserved in amber, according to a report published today in the journal Current Biology.

While individual dinosaur-era feathers have been found in amber, and evidence for feathered dinosaurs is captured in fossil impressions, this is the first time that scientists are able to clearly associate well-preserved feathers with a dinosaur, and in turn gain a better understanding of the evolution and structure of dinosaur feathers.

We clearly need a new Jurassic Park movie featuring cute feathery dinosaurs.

In a never-before-seen phenomenon, a fish commandeered the body of a jellyfish for protection. Although it is common for fish to swim through jellyfish tentacles to avoid predators, this particular defense mechanism has never been seen before.

Harsh blizzard ravages Standing Rock as vital support and the media pack it up

In the days since an apparent victory, the Standing Rock camp has been battered by an oncoming snowstorm — and conditions are now dire. 

Heavy snow and wind batters the sides of tipis and tents, forcing the Standing Rock resistance indoors. 

The roads have shut down going in and out of Oceti Sakowin Camp.

The media are clearing out, packing up satellite trucks and heading home. 

Meanwhile, the police haven’t pulled back from the front lines, and the Dakota Access Pipeline company has no intention of leaving either.

“It’s a distraction,” Oceti Sakowin Camp volunteer Ethan Braughton said in an interview. “If they were leaving, they’d take the razor wire and all their vehicles, but they’re still continuing to get the drill pad ready. They’re not going anywhere, they just want us to leave.”

Many of the Lakota Sioux have permanently settled at Standing Rock and they’re not leaving, vowing to see this fight through.

The media will report a “win,” and everyone celebrates and becomes complacent. A lot of people think the fight is over, and lose interest. And that’s when the people still left at Standing Rock, alone and with people no longer watching as they were, will be thrown to the wolves.

So please, PLEASE continue to watch this! There will probably be a fight over the permit, and the Water Protectors will need us more than ever! Winter is basically here, and this would be a bad time to think things are over.

The material has been hand dyed with turmeric, tea and onions skins. Then hand printed with lino cuts to represent the larvae, workers, drones and the single queen bee. The quilt was then then pieced, quilted and bound by hand.

Hasta Muerte Coffee is the collective vision of a few homies to open up a coffee shop where vibrant community, good coffee and social justice work meet in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oaktown.

The founding members of the collective are three Latinx folks. Between us, projects we’ve organized here in Oakland include running two print shops, a book and zine distro, and a community bike shop that trains and mentors youth. We have also facilitated reading groups, educational events on local and radical histories and kept it lit the whole time.

As the years have gone by we’ve seen a steady need for welcoming, loving, and autonomous spaces for our folks to gather, connect, and build with each other.

Hasta Muerte Coffee is an effort to hold down a Latinx owned and run space with our community in a time of displacement. We want to inspire the communities we are a part of, especially young people, to share stories, histories and struggles that sustain the Town’s cultural legacy of resilience from people of color, queer folks, activists, and undocumented communities. 

We’re doing this by opening a warm + inviting familia style coffee shop serving specialty coffee and Latinx bites from local organic sources.

We’ll be home to a selection of books, zines, and merchandise highlighting the spirit and social fabric that makes Oaktown so radiant.

As a collective project, our shop will be owned and run by the workers who make collective decisions, and maintain a non hierarchical kinda work space. This model ensures that the workers who own and run the space receive 100% of the profits and our vision stays true.

So now we’re here. We have a dope vision, a beautiful space, a solid business plan, and a dedicated collectivo. What we need now is your contribution, to begin the next steps in the process building out our space making Hasta Muerte Coffee a reality.

By contributing to our project, you’re not only helping build a coffee shop, your actively helping open a space for community members to host meetings, events, classes, and find resources like tenant rights counseling, support for undocumented workers, and drop in tutoring for youth.
