I’ve seen one too many people try to sell the idea that Hoffman was responsible for Amanda’s rigged traps, so let’s clear something up: In Saw VI, we see Amanda confront Hoffman for making changes to the mechanism of the Rack. She points out his changes to John and says: “Told you he’d fuck with it.”
What this implies:
- Hoffman is grasping for control
- He wants to run the show his way, not John’s
What it doesn’t imply:
- He’s rigging traps
Why? Because both John and Amanda are fully aware that Hoffman has been messing with the Rack (John’s favourite trap, mind you), and while Amanda is very happy to point that out, neither she nor John tell him to undo any of his changes. Quite the opposite, in fact; Amanda actually selects the correct grease for him just to prove she’s the more knowledgable (and therefore more worthy) apprentice. The whole thing is nothing more than a dick-waving contest.
This scene is not about rigging traps.
It’s about the rising tension between the apprentices (“Get used to me, because I’m not going anywhere”), John’s eternal and insufferable hypocrisy (“Do you like how brutality feels, Mark?”), and Hoffman’s desire to run the show alone (“How many more next times are there gonna be?”).
I started writing out a reply to @voidfluid and it really got away from me, so I’m adding it as a reblog instead:
I think it’s a bit of both. Hoffman clearly resents being under John’s control, but I think there’s an argument to be made that he’s also found purpose in doling out what he sees as “true justice”. (His speech to the precinct in V is basically his mission statement as Jigsaw.)
Unlike John, Hoffman doesn’t care whether trap victims are ‘rehabilitated’ — He’s just there to make sure they suffer for their crimes. That’s why any time we see Hoffman make a Jigsaw trap without John’s involvement (Pendulum, Pound of Flesh, Horsepower), the victims are always very much guilty of something: murder, extortion, and neo-Naziism respectively.
With that said, there’s definitely some serious conflict there. Hoffman is all about vengeance and punishment. He can’t stand the idea that people like Seth Baxter might avoid facing the consequences of their actions. That’s what drives him, and John is very careful to exploit this in order to recruit him. However, he’s visibly disturbed by Seth’s execution, and despite his desensitisation to the extreme violence of Jigsaw work and his severe emotional repression under John’s insistent ‘guidance’, he still can’t look at a trap going off.
Given that conflict and his underlying resentment, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that Hoffman might abandon the Jigsaw mantle once John’s work is done. At first glance, the Pound of Flesh trap seems to contradict that. He’s clearly experimenting with running the operation without John at the helm — But he’s also closely examining the results. (“You didn’t cut your own arm off?” “I did… He wanted us to learn a lesson.” “And did you?”) I don’t think he’s just being creepy during this conversation with Simone. I think he’s genuinely probing the validity of John’s claims and finding them to be false.
So if John’s full of shit and Hoffman can’t stand to watch a trap go off, would he really continue as Jigsaw without the threat of blackmail hanging over him? Well… maybe? It’s possible his disillusionment with the justice system and his desire to mete out “true” justice of his own might spur him to continue. Perhaps he’d pivot and become a sort of copycat with his own methodology. It’s hard to say. But this is exactly why he’s such a fascinating character to me!

I was tagged by @euphoricvulture and @mortemain , so here are my answers!
Hair color: Naturally brown. I miss dying it, but I can’t be bothered with the upkeep now my hair is super short
Favorite color: Basically any colour in the overlap of blue and green. Turquoise, cyan, teal… if you can find it in an atoll lagoon, you can be sure I’ll love it!
Favorite drink: Red Bull, and a grapefruit drink called Ting
One thing I love about myself: I’m kind of a vibe
If you could be any animal, what would you be: Inside me are two beasts: My kaiju sona Strife, and a serval. All three of us are the same person
Dream place to visit: I’ve already visited my true dream destination, so next on the list is probably Japan
What’s one thing you’re looking forward to right now: That’s a secret!
Your biggest dream: Honestly my answer to this depends entirely on whether or not we’re confined to the realms of reality, haha
Song that’s permanently on repeat in your head: The entire Deftones discography 💖

When I was a little boy, girls used to just do random cartwheels for no reason. Then one day, they stopped. Now that I am a man, no women randomly do cartwheels. This is because society is evil and killed the cartwheel impulse in their soul. They don't even spin horizontally anymore. It's fucked up.
um actually there's nothing wrong with letting cats be outdoor pets. your cat is depressed locked inside forever. it's animal abuse. let it outside. more cats should be let outside more often. especially overnight.

Maybe one reason time seems to speed up in adult life is because when your full time job leaves you roughly 5 hours of free time a day plus two days off a week your life turns into a sort of monotony that makes the days blend together and creative pursuits move in slow motion as you can only get to them when other your commitments are done.
When you look back and think damn 2019 wasn’t that long ago where did the time go? Job. Your Job took it.
Wait, hold up. So the cover art for the 4K releases of Saw V, VI, and VII were revealed at SSDC, and they feature Strahm (V) and Jill (both VI and VII).
