Sign ups PINNED! Open NOW, April 26 through May 2! A low stakes Life Series AU creation event about making a friend, creating a story, and appreciating the journey! Sign up, be assigned a random soulmate, and spend a month creating an AU together. Mods: liloinkoink, anpanbun, mrfroag, umbrify, cjskribblez, kingtheghast Icon/header: saint-starling
Soulsmake is an event centered on working with someone new and enjoying the process of creation!
Sign up as a writer, an artist, or either, and be assigned a random soulmate, ideally in pairs of writer+artist. Once pairs are rolled, you’ll have about a month to talk to your soulmate, find some common ground, and make an AU!
What that creation process looks like is up to the two of you—you two can draw or write as much or as little as you’d like. You can make full color art or a simple sketch, and you can write a full fic or a simple outline. You don’t even have to make anything at all! All you have to do to “complete” this event is have a single conversation.
Soulsmake is about making a friend and making a story. It’s about the journey, not the destination. Simply have fun with this low stakes, low pressure creativity event!
Below is the planned schedule, and a small explanation as to how each phase will work.
Sunday, April 26 - Signups open
Saturday, May 2 - Signups close
Sunday, May 3 - Pool limiting review opens
Wednesday, May 6 - Pool limiting deadline
Monday, May 18 - Soulmates assigned
Monday, June 15 - Official completion deadline
[There will also be two optional rounds to request soulmate reassignment and be rerolled in a smaller pool. Explanation and dates below the cut.]
Below the cut will be more information on each step of the event process. If you have any questions not answered in this post, check the #soulsmake qna tag on this blog to see if your question has been answered already, and if it hasn’t, our ask box is open!
Sign ups:
There will be one week to sign up for Soulsmake. We’ll be asking you for your name, your socials, and your discord—this is the information that will be available to the other participants of the event during the limiting process.
Next, we’ll ask if you’re signing up as an artist, a writer, or either. We’ll be trying to make pairs of artist+writer, though we don’t imagine an even amount of artists and writers will be signing up, so that isn’t guaranteed. Signing up as either will help with balancing these, so if you can do both, consider signing up as either!
After that, we’ll be asking you your age bracket, specifically whether you’re an adult or a minor, and then ask if you’re comfortable working with someone in the opposite age bracket. Your exact age is not necessary, and this information will not be public.
Then, we’ll be asking whether you’re comfortable with working in a team of three instead of as a pair. This is in case of an odd number of sign ups. We may also consider using teams of three so all teams have at least one writer and one artist.
Finally, we'll be asking about your interests—favorite characters, relationships, tropes, AUs, tones, genres, fandoms—as well as what things you are not willing to create. This information will help us make sure pairs will have common ground to work together (and ensure we don't pair, say, someone who only wants to make fluffy romance AUs with someone who only wants to make a gory horror show). It will also be available to other participants so people can get a quick feel for their soulmate's interests. We encourage you to be as detailed and include as many options as you want for your interests, and require you to be respectful in explaining what you won't create.
Once you hit submit on the sign up sheet, the confirmation page will have a link to the event’s discord server. Joining that is required, as we’ll be hosting much of the rest of the event through discord!
(If you forget to grab the link before closing the confirmation page, please send an ask off anon for the discord invite! It will be the same server as last year, though you must sign up to gain access to the 2026 portion and be considered for rolling.)
Pool limiting:
The next phase of the event is pool limiting. Once sign ups are closed, participants will gain access to a spreadsheet of the names, socials, and discords of all the other participants. You will then be asked to fill out a second form with everyone you want removed from your roster of possible soulmates.
This serves two purposes. The first: if you have any usual creation partner(s) you tend to work with, we would like you to write them down. We want you to work with someone you’ve never worked with before, so note down your usual accomplices to ensure you don’t get them by chance!
Second, if you see someone on the list you don’t get along with, we’d also like you to note down their names and remove them from your pool. We don’t want anyone to be randomly paired with someone they already know they won’t work well with, so this step should help minimize those conflicts by preventing them from happening.
Who you put on your limits list will be completely private, and once the event has ended, the list will be deleted.
If you do not submit a limit form, we will assume you are open to anyone who fits within the criteria from the original signup form.
Soulmate Assignment:
[Note: Rolling soulmates may end up taking an extra day or two depending on how many sign ups we receive! If this happens, the other dates will also be pushed back accordingly.]
Finally, the soulmates will be rolled! When pairs are finalized, we’ll announce them in the discord server by pinging users. The creation period can start here for most pairs as they DM their partners, as the creation period will be done one-on-one in private DMs between soulmates rather than in the server itself.
In the first week after soulmates are rolled, participants will be asked to chat with their soulmates and get to know each other. Find out what your soulmate is interested in and find common ground!
In this stage, we’ll ask you all to be flexible and respectful. It’s possible your soulmate doesn’t watch your favorite CC, or that you aren’t super interested in your soulmate’s top favorite type of AU. That’s okay! Try to be open-minded about what your soulmate is interested in, and be flexible with what you yourself are willing to create—you’ll likely have something to bond over!
Open, kind communication will be key, as will a willingness to branch out and explore new things! If you aren’t able to be respectful and flexible, this event may not be for you.
Soulmate Rerolls:
That said, if you find that you and your soulmate aren’t compatible for any reason (ie you can find no common ground, or you’re on opposite timezones, or you just don’t really click or get along), you can come to an amicable split. If you and your soulmate decide to split, one member should head to the discord and make a ticket with the mods and ask to reroll.
Fair warning: If you and your partner cannot be respectful of each other in your decision to split, one or both of you might be asked to bow out of the event. If you do not inform your soulmate of your intent to reroll and we have to tell them, you will be blacklisted from the event.
We will do rerolls in two batches: everyone who requests a reroll in the first week will be dropped in a smaller pool and have new soulmates chosen among those members. Once those have been rolled, if we have further requests for rerolls during the second week, we will repeat this process. Here are the dates for those:
Saturday, May 23: Soulmate reroll request deadline first round
Monday, May 25: Rerolled soulmates assigned first round
Saturday, May 30: Soulmate reroll request deadline second round
Monday, June 1: Rerolled soulmates assigned second round
Due to the smaller pools, we cannot guarantee as high of an interest match for the smaller pools, but we will do our best! We will not reroll soulmates after the halfway point of the event.
Creation period:
Once the pairs are solidified, the creation period officially begins! Soulmates will have one month to make up an AU together, and once the month is up, you’ll be asked to share what you have.
Again, this is a low stakes, low pressure event. You can go all out and create full art or a completed fic, or you can do some simple sketches or a simple outline. The only thing you need to do to “complete” this event is have a conversation with your soulmate!
While this is a Life Series fandom event, if you and your soulmate feel inspired to make an AU for another fandom you both share, you can do so. You can also make an original story or work with your sonas/OCs. Shipping is allowed if both parties are comfortable with it, and while we do not care if adult pairs create NSFW, we will not be reblogging it to this blog. Absolutely no GenAI or C.AI will be allowed.
More information on the rules can be found in this rules post.
You can share your work by pinging this blog and using the #soulsmake tag! If you and your partner are inspired, you are more than welcome to continue creating for your AU after the event is over.
If you still have questions after this, please feel free to check the #soulsmake faq and #soulsmake qna tags or send us an ask! Additionally, any other informational posts will go in the #soulsmake info tag.

will you ever run this again? Just found out abt it and love this concept ajfkg
Maybe! I love Soulsmake and love running it. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to doing it again, but we haven't yet talked about it. If we do, it likely won't be for a few months—I recently got significantly busier IRL, and my schedule will not calm down for several months, so I definitely cannot run it again until at least the end of the year, if that.
This time probably at least half of all pairs were rolled by one mod working overtime on her own to meet the rolling deadline in time (I keep saying it but everyone say thank you so much @cjskribblez for carrying Soulsmake 2026 on her back) because several of us ended up way busier than expected, and I do not want her or any of the other mods to have to do something like that again. I'd need to be sure the time we picked was free and clear for sure for myself and multiple mods, and that might take a while!
If it does run again, it will probably be closer to or, more likely, in 2027!
i didnt get to finish my comic for @soulsmake but i am proud of what i made so far anyway!! I might finish this in the future but regardless i did have fun!
Here an outline of the @soulsmake work with artist soulmate @cloudycloudsminusclouds! They're waiting until the project is finished to draw! Actually writing it is taking its slow old time for me, but that's just what happens, so yall are getting an outline!
Summary: Cleo, a single mom with two kids Scar and Bdubs, is adamant that she does not need help in the struggles she's facing alone. Martyn essentially makes her realize how much she actually needs help until she finally relents and she goes to him for comfort!
It may not all be accurate to the final work, but this is what I had!
~~~
#1 - Morning time
Cleo is at the farmers market, shopping list in hand, mildly fretting about dietary needs and dinner plans and school lunches and getting things finished at home.
She's staring at the new seafood stand of all places, trying to determine which ones would be cheaper and healthier to get when a hand lands on her shoulder.
Martyn asks "Is there anything I can help you with, ma'am?" as the owner of a stand is supposed to be polite and helpful to customers.
Cleo being her stubborn and mildly sarcastic self, she responds with "Yes, actually. An improvement to my sanity would be immensely helpful right now." She waves her shopping list around with a grimace.
Martyn offers to help her with her shopping list, but Cleo refuses, saying she's done this on her own for years now. She doesn't need the help. She just wants the cheapest salmon he has and then she'll move on. Simple as that.
With a sigh, Martyn relents, pointing her towards what she wants. As she leaves, he reminds her that there will always be people to help, even if she thinks she doesn't need it now.
#2 - Mid-afternoon
Cleo has just got out of a parent-teacher meeting at the school regarding Bdubs. She's ticked off because they asked if he has a father figure in his life to look up to. She cant understand why they can't recognize how hard she is trying to raise them without their father in the picture.
In order to calm herself down and treat herself for how much she's trying, she goes to a local cafe to grab a coffee (because tea is just not her thing). It's nice, sitting in a booth by a window and sipping on a piping hot drink.
Of course, Martyn walks into the cafe and orders himself a cup of tea. When he spots Cleo, he comes over and asks if he can sit at her table. Reluctantly, Cleo agrees.
Martyn asks how things are going. Cleo gives a mild and slightly vague answer. It's a small, stretched conversation.
Maybe Martyn asks if Cleo has a partner. Cleo retorts back in suspicion that he's only being nice to get her phone number and meet her kids. He disagrees, saying that he was only asking authorities needed to get involved — to him, she looked like she was being overworked and if it was her partner's fault, then he would have reason to get the police involved. Cleo says she has no one but her boys, and that she's doing fine, like she has been all along. She says that Martyn has no reason to be prying about her personal life and that he should just leave her alone.
He decides that he will leave, but not before leaving a reciept with his phone number on it on the table. Cleo pockets it for no other reason than to block him, which she ends up not doing at all.
#3 - Evening/night
Cleo is sitting in an armchair in the living room, enjoying the peace she obtained when Bdubs was put to bed without a fight and Scar is enjoying a sleepover with Grian and Mumbo. She's letting her thoughts drift to the nicer times, before Etho left the three behind. She mourns that old life in quietness now.
It's sometime past 11pm when there is a knock at the front door. She startles out of her armchair, eying the curtained windows with confusion. Who would be needing her at this hour?
She opens the door and sees Martyn. She begins to ask how he had found her house but stops when she sees Scar beside him. She's confused, badly.
"Why do you have Scar with you, Martyn?" she asks, pulling the tired and kinda out-of-it Scar close to her. "Why isn't he at his friend's house?"
"I found him roaming the streets. I asked him if I could bring him home, and where he lived. He told me this address— I didn't realize he lived with you."
"He's my son. Of course he lives with me." Cleo then pauses, looking down at Scar before returning a now softened gaze towards Martyn. "I'm sorry. I— thank you for bringing him home. But I need you to leave, please. And don't come back. I appreciate your help here, but I don't need anything else from you. Okay?"
Martyn assents, leaving Cleo and Scar in the doorway. Cleo lets Scar cuddle with her on the armchair until both of them fall asleep.
+1 - Morning
Both of the boys are at school again. Cleo is washing the previous night's dishes and watching the birdfeeder outside the window. The birds' camaraderie is something she finds herself envying, to her dismay. She really doesn't have any friends. No one to spend adult time with, no one to struggle with, no one to celebrate with. Not since her ex-husband took all of his friends with him. She scowls absent-mindedly at that thought.
She finishes the dishes, dries her hands, then sticks her hands in the pockets of the long flannel she decided to wear for the morning chill. Her fingers find the slip of paper given to her that day at the cafe with Martyn. She pulls it out, finds the man's phone number and considers it with intent.
Martyn was persistently there. Even though she denied it, she loved it. He recognized her burnout and her strength. What hurt could it do to call him?
After some hesistation, she dials the number on the paper. The phone rings two times before the call is answered. Martyn's sleepy voice comes through the speaker.
"Martyn's phone, who is this?" "It's Cleo." "Cleo? Oh! It's nice to hear from you! I honestly thought you'd forgotten about the number I'd given you. What can I do for you this fine morning?"
Cleo pauses, unsure exactly what she wants Martyn to do for her. "Can you come over? To my house?" "What time?" "Any time, but before the boys get home from school, if possible." "No problem. Everything alright?" "I think it will be once you're here." "Gotcha. Give me twenty."
Welcome to the world of Magic. Set somewhere in the Victorian era transplanted in chilly Canada, we have our first mixed generation of spellcasters in magical education.
This story focuses on the institution hidden away in the icy mountains: Lysander Samsara's School of Magic.
Join our two rivals, Ren and Martyn, on their journey to understanding each other in the midst of rumors, pride and a war that had been started long before they were born.
We've written quite a lot so the project will be stitched together across several posts. All will be linked together so that anyone who's interested can easily access all of them.
Land of the Dead
The afterlife was thought to exist for many reasons. One, the existence of Scrounge. It was a place filled with rotting corpses and decomposing . . . everything, so naturally when it was first discovered, it was suspected to be the place where all bodies passed on go to. Two, the dead must go somewhere after they die, right?
But after some investigation (and some serious grave robbing), Scrounge was determined to be something completely separate from the Human Realm
Souls
After that discovery, people reasoned that if bodies remain then souls must pass on. It is believed this is the residual energy fueling Scrounge. Since it seeks out the life of the living, surely the organisms there must be those who are dead.
People also believe that souls exist in Sol Inorast, the realm of magic. There are several entities that imitate humans and behave like the ghosts that human superstition have so frequently written about.
Research is still being done to see if this is true or not.
Magic is Hungry
There is a belief that due to the law of equivalent exchange, the use of magic is also part of this rule.
Many magic cults exist around the world where spellcasters with the highest potency for a certain type of magic are permitted to keep studying magic. After a certain number of slots are filled, the rest of the spellcasters in that community are no longer able to study or practice Magic.
In those believes, it is believed that Magic behaves like a large dragon and lends its fangs and flame to those who are worthy. But because it is one creature, too many people asking things from it will divide its attention and make everyone's Magic collectively weaker.
So, the solution of this is to starve it of customers. By limiting the number of spellcasters, the dragon, desperate to serve humanity, will give the few remaining spellcasters more power.
Guardspells
There are some things that Magic cannot do.
No one knows why or how, but it is widely accepted that there are spells in effect that are so large and so widespread that they cover the entire globe.
So while organizing a timeline of events. I realized that i could do something really funny. What if I made each chapter correlate with a theme or vibe surrounding each existing installment of the life series. there just so happen to be 10.
LSMS
or: Lysander Samsara's School of Magic.
The campus is all inclusive and can support up to 3000 residents. There are 1000 enrolled students and 1500 (approximately) residents at present day, making it the largest school of magic to date.
There is infant and senior care offered year round along with permanent lodging for students who wish to stay on campus. People enrolling outside of the standard curriculum are also welcome via transfer programs or adult education.
Standard Enrollment is from ages 16-25. Students are enrolled into a 4-6 class school day, 8 classes per year.
Each student is sorted into dormitories based on their preferred Magic Class (Runic/Incanta) to encourage peers to study together. Each dormitory has double and triple rooms and students are allowed to choose their roommates and thanks to some streamlining using Magic, adjustments and reports are able to be handled very fast.
In terms of classes, the students are sorted based on their Focus and given priority based on their desired Magical Focus (similar how college majors are sorted).
General education is required in two types: magical and non-magical. Students are required to take magical language classes at least once a year, most choose to take the classes in ascending numerical order. Non-magical classes cover the standard education of the time. Students are required to take:
1 Civics class
2 Home EC classes
2 History classes
1 Language class that is not English
1 English class
During their academic career.
Classes are not counted towards graduation (with exception of the required classes) but rather the number of projects a student completes. Students are expected to complete at least 4 unique projects that express their ambition and show a proficient use of Magic.
Let's begin shall we?
(this long so imma stick a break line here)
Names and Titles
Every spellcaster is given a title that can easily communicate their expertise to fellow spellcasters. The system was put into place almost a century before the first schools were ever founded.
A title is created by four to five parts:
[Rank] [Name] [Class and Subclass] [Focus] [Suffix]
A spellcaster's rank ascends based on their achievements. The spellcaster themself rewards themselves with higher ranking names and there is little official regulation around who can claim to be what.
Ranks in ascending order:
Sorcerer
Warlock
Magus
← capable of mentalism (usually above 30 years of age)
Shaman
Wizard
Witch
Magician
← students are unranked until they graduate
There is an honor code in the ranking system and if you boast a rank higher than you are, you will be expected to prove yourself in whatever capacity you have boasted about.
The only rank that is rewarded and not chosen is Sage. This title appends all previous titles and is only achievable when a spellcaster performs Magic that transcends expectation. It can only be given by witnesses and other spellcasters.
The name part of the title is the simplest since it is simply the spellcaster's given name. Usually it is just the first name but some spellcasters choose to use their first and last name.
Both Rank and Name are meant to be wards against arrogance and pride. Back when spellcasters were fewer in number, there had been infighting because of family names or false claims of power. Since then, the self-guided ranking system and the lack of surnames in a title have provided an out for those who want to avoid such conflicts.
Class and Subclass are determined by the spellcaster's chosen type of casting. Spellcasters can learn more than one if they so choose, but in a title, spellcasters will only ever have one of each.
Examples:
Incanta Expulsor
Runic Summoner
Mentalis Evoker
Focus is determined by the spellcaster's magical specialty. It isn't hyperspecific but denotes which of six "genres" of Magic the spellcaster is using. A title can contain any number of foci, but unlike Rank, foci are determined by the spellcaster's educator and stays with them even after they graduate. Additions to the Focus section of a title require approval from that same educator or a spellcaster of Sorcerer rank or higher.
Foci:
Elemental
Transfiguror
Storyweaver
Alchemist/Artificer
Warden
Tamer
The suffix is a part of the title that only students have. It replaces the rank part of the title since students are still learning and therefore not contributing to the greater world. It is a quick way of verifying a spellcaster's expertise or age. It simply reads "Focus"
In its natural state, it does not have Magic. Nothing in this realm is magical or has magical properties unless affected by Magic.
Sol Inorast
"Honest Soil"
The natural world of Magic and where Magic came from. It is home to every possible type of Magic and magical creature.
It is the birthplace of the Language of Magic and everything that lives there knows how to speak and write it.
Basically the Fae Wilds. Fae included.
Correath
The world of infinite energy.
An eternal storm of flames that burn anything that touch them.
It is a bounty of Magic and fuels it anywhere in the universe, even from a distance of realms away.
The Void
The world of infinite nothingness
The embodiment of pure emptiness.
Magic does not exist here. Theoretically, this is where all displaced mass or energy comes from.
Scrounge
The "land of the dead"
A land filled with creatures and soil that sucks the energy out of everything it touches.
Magic exists here but calling upon it is incredibly difficult when even the air you breathe is trying to kill you.
A popular banishment location
History
Most of magical history is records of the achievements that ancient spellcasters had completed to make the world a better place. Said history only dates back a couple of centuries when it is also common knowledge that Magic has existed for much longer than that.
The first event in recorded history is the breaking of the first coven.
Back when Magic was first being used, there were eight families credited with creating the known world of Magic.
Elderwood: The first to learn and record Magic. The first to discover Sol Inorast
Ophiuchus: The first to discover Correath and Void.
Lyresong: The first Incanta.
Moonstar: The first Runic.
Major: The first Elemental.
Sparfeld: The original Alchemist and first Artificers
Lord and Lady Death: The first to discover Scrounge. the first Tamers.
Samsara: The first healers. The one who sought to share Magic.
The story goes that Magic was only accessible to these eight families. It was a well kept secret and each family worked to keep it that way. All except one. Samsara, or more commonly known as "The Defector," did not approve of the idea of power being hoarded when it could be used to better the world.
Samsara stole the knowledge the eight of them had collected and created a school of magic. By the time the other families had realized what he had done, he had established six schools in every corner of the globe. Under his protection, they defended the right to learn Magic and the first magic war was waged.
It ended in the first coven being completely disbanded after infighting threatened to tear their alliance apart. Samsara abandoned his name and carried on making schools everywhere he could, using old castles and abandoned fortresses to create twenty unique Magical Schools.
The lineage of each of the other seven families remained secluded, even from each other until recently. Their names still hold power in the magic using community, and anyone who is a descendant of the families is usually taught Magic much younger.
However, in the last two decades, the founding families have let go of the old grudge of centuries past and have started allowing their children to attend the Magic Schools of Samsara.
Magical Tools
Wands
Wands are popular tools with spells prebuilt into them. They are hollow rods of wood with a piece of parchment inside that dictates what spell can be cast with it. Usually, it is simple light illusion magic that allows the user to write runes in the air. Those wands are standard issue in most magic schools.
As long as the spell inside the wand isn't damaged or torn, the wand can last as long as it needs to and they are often passed down or sold commercially with descriptions of the pre-built spells.
Trigger wands are also commonplace where the spell inside is latent until the spell is triggered. These are usually attack-type wands.
Staffs
Similar to a wand, a Staff is a popular tool to help with spellcasting. Though, staffs are usually hand made by the one who uses them so they are held with much more reverence than wands.
A staff is typically carved with the spell that it is able to cast which makes the whole thing feel more permanent and important. Typically staff users make the spells custom to their own magic style so another spellcaster would not be able to use their own weapon against them. This is why staffs are usually retired with their user.
Hats
Though not inherently magical, hats are a bold fashion statement that has a lot of historical significance with Magic. They can be imbued with magic though, as could any piece of cloth through stitchwork, inking or branding.
Books
A primary weapon of storyweavers.
Grimoires are collections of recorded spells with specific binding that prevents the spells from being activated all at once. These are very hard to find and are kept in specific locations with specific wards that prevent the grimoire from leaving in unsafe hands.
With proper care, a book can be a good portable Runic spellcasting tool.
Rings
Similar to wands, rings can be imbued with Magic via metal engraving. The spells that are able to be cast with them are typically much weaker than their larger counterparts but sometimes that's all that's needed.
Rings can also carry magic gemstones which have largely been debated whether or not to actually enhance spellcasting potential since they are so small.
Crystals
Crystals are capable of holding energy if carved or harvested correctly. They are a popular medium for large scale spells with limited space or time.
It is debated on the actual source of their energy. Some believe that they get their power from the stars and the celestial bodies, others believe they get their power from the earth, and some believe that only gemstones from Sol Inorast are capable of magic.
None of these theories are necessarily wrong, but research has done nothing to prove which is most true.
Popular Occupations
World Cleaner - a spellcaster specifically trained in reversal or removal spells to remove the presence and effect of magic in a certain area or under a certain spell.
Fortune Teller - a spellcaster that can lay out multiple futures for their client. It's less of a fine art that can actually tell the future but rather a well educated guess using the powers of extreme observation.
Professional Tamer - a spellcaster that specializes in either taming magical creatures to fulfill a purpose or a communication bridge between magical creatures and humans.
Magic Athlete - a spellcaster who is physically capable as well as magical. They participate in sports enhanced by magic and provide entertainment and outreach for the magical world.
[Other]
There are more out there but these are the few that I came up with while working on other parts of the world.
Sports
Magic Ball. Combination of rugby and clash of clans. Very strict rules.
Racing. Any and all types of racing. Whether it be running, flying, swimming, climbing. This sport has a lot of subcategories.
Botfighting. Popular among the Mechanica class, basically bot battles but with golems or other machines.
Dance. Popular with Storyweavers.
Magic Puck. Magic hockey with full contact allowed as part of the rules.
Airball. An advanced form of basketball but exclusively performed in the air. The rules are simple which makes the differences between the players their choice of flight.
Author's Notes.
An @soulsmake creation still in progress.
@skittishwishes <- my lovely partner
Welcome to the world of Magic. Set somewhere in the Victorian era transplanted in chilly Canada, we have our first mixed generation of spellcasters in magical education.
This story focuses on the institution hidden away in the icy mountains: Lysander Samsara's School of Magic.
Join our two rivals, Ren and Martyn, on their journey to understanding each other in the midst of rumors, pride and a war that had been started long before they were born.
We've written quite a lot so the project will be stitched together across several posts. All will be linked together so that anyone who's interested can easily access all of them.
Worldbuilding / Education / Cast / Mythology / Magic System / Plot / Behind the Scenes
The Language of Magic
A "Spellcaster" is the formal term for those who can use Magic. Whether they were taught or they figured it out themselves, spellcasters make up about 10% of the world population.
Magic itself is a mysterious force that only responds when the spellcaster speaks or writes in the Language of Magic.
Runes and Incantations are the two basic methods of using Magic.
Runes
Runes are the characters that can be put together to write commands of Magic. There are 70* characters that correlate to specific syllables that, when strung together properly, form words and sentences.
[Diagram coming soon, still working on the phonetic breakdowns. *alphabet still wip so total number of characters currently unknown]
After centuries of trial and error, the entire alphabet of Runes has been learned and transcribed into a universal magical dictionary.
Runes are used in two subclasses of Magic: Mechanics and Evocation.
Mechanics is the practice of weaving magic and mass. A stereotypical example of this practice are Golems.
Evocation is the practice of using Rune to create or protect. A stereotypical example of this practice are Seals.
Runes have the benefit of being long-lived. Unless specified otherwise, runes do not decay over time assuming the medium on which they are written does not eventually distort to make the runes illegible.
As long as there is space for the runes to be read, the magic invoked will always be there.
The size and legibility of the written spell denotes its strength.
Incantations
Incantations are the words spoken aloud to audibly command Magic. There are 70* unique syllables that correspond to the written alphabet, though it is largely debated which came first.
[Diagram coming soon, still working on the phonetic breakdowns. *alphabet still wip so total number of characters currently unknown]
Incantations were the earliest form of Magic which was mostly discovered on accident.
Incantations are used in two subclasses of Magic: Summoning and Expulsion
Summoning is the practice of accessing different realms and bringing them to the human realm. A stereotypical example of this practice are Familiars.
Expulsion is the practice of distance-based magic in any capacity. A stereotypical example of this practice is Combat Magic.
Incantations have the benefit of being nearly completely traceless. Once a spell is used, there is no record of what words were spoken, thus no way to properly undo what was done. If the Incanted spell is a lingering type of spell, the spell will not disappear until the one who Incanted it reverses the spell or dies.
These types of spells are also local and can't travel outside of audible range of the spellcaster.
The volume of the spoken spell denotes its strength and range.
Mentalism
Mentalism or Mental Magic is the mental invocation of Magic. This is an advanced form of spellcasting that only experienced spellcasters can obtain.
Usually, spellcasters don't have access to Mental Magic until they turn thirty because of the large amounts of practice and repetition needed to achieve it.
Mentalism comes from a spellcaster's practice with specific spells and mannerisms that accompany the casting process. Some use hand signs, some use breathing patterns or blinks. If a spell is practiced and used enough times, the signs can even be invisible to those who don't know the spellcaster well enough.
Because of the large amount of skill and time required to be a Mentalist, spells cast using Mental Magic are instantaneous. They tend to fade quickly; therefore, only used for short term spells.
Now that we've covered the basics, let's talk about:
Magical Focus
When a spellcaster is still enrolled in a school of magic, they will usually choose one of six Magical Foci (or focuses, i dont know how to plural focus).
Including their class and subclass, students can choose any number of Foci, but upon enrollment they are restricted to just one.
Upon graduation, a student can choose which Focus to include or exclude in their official title. Usually, it will be the one they are best at, but this isn't always the case.
Elemental Focus: Every person has a calling towards something that exists in the universe. "Elements" are the purest form of matter and energy. The Elemental Focus teaches students how to harness these materials and energies.
Transfiguration Focus: The shapes of the universe never stay the same. No matter what it is or no matter who you are, bodies will always change shape. The Transfiguration Focus teaches students how to become that change.
Storyweaving Focus: Literature and human imagination are meant to be shared. The author imagines what they write and in turn the reader must reach out and try to grasp what they meant. The Storyweaving Focus teaches students how to bring those visions to life.
Alchemy/Artifice Focus: Magic should never belong to just the living. Everything in the world has the capacity to present itself as something grander than its parts. The Alchemy/Artifice Focus teaches students how to imbue objects and matter with magic.
Ward Focus: Safety above all else is a lesson all humans must learn. The words that form Law should be fair and absolute. The Ward Focus teaches students how to use magic to protect and defend against the forces that might do them harm.
Tamer Focus: Humans aren't the only creatures that can use magic. Whether it be the animals in the world around them, or the magical beasts from worlds beyond, the Tamer Focus teaches students about all living things and how to coexist with or even train them.
and last but not least:
Cautions
Magic is all powerful, but Magic is not infinite. Like heat, Magic functions as a type of energy that is made, spent and then goes out.
You can't get something from nothing. Fortunately, Magic has access to realms where infinities do exist, which allows for some ridiculous feats of nature to occur. But it only works if it is offset by something of higher or equal value.
Ritual sacrifice was often believed to enhance the effects of Magic, or burning of specific plants or stones was said to undo the effects of Magic. Through some complicated logical loops, both of these methods did have their merits, but only by chance.
Through the centuries, spellcasters have scientifically proven that equivalent exchange is an inescapable truth, even with Magic. Animal sacrifices or plant burning is still a practice but not as common since alternative methods to boosting a spell's power have been discovered.
And though realms where infinities do exist have been discovered, not all infinities are obtainable.
Immortality, Omniscience, Omnipotence, and Eternity are not concepts that Magic can create. It can't interact with the soul and it can't create an infinity without sacrificing an infinity. Magic can only interact with the present as it progresses.
Many have tried. None have ever succeeded.
Author's notes
before anyone says anything: yes im aware that this power system is similar to witch hat atelier.
i was bribed into reading wha around the time i was developing the magic system and when i tell you my flabbers were gasted. a magic system with limitless power using a type of magic language that can do anything the caster wants it to if they know how to ask?? I WAS JUST MAKING A SYSTEM LIKE THAT!!!
i'm both bitter and amazed that i created something similar to the legendary Shirahama Kamome and i will never live this down.
with that out of the way:
thank you for reading!
more magic and its uses will be specified in other posts as it becomes relevant. this post is already pretty long and i might shuffle things around in post but we'll see.
Hello! Do you enjoy Gem? Shiny Duo? Time Loops? All of them combined? @soulsmake 2026 got you covered! Because me and my fellow soulmate created an AU that includes all of that! You can read the fic here!
Summary:
“Welcome to Past Life.”
It was all sudden.
Gem woke up in an instant, taking a breath she didn’t know she had been holding. This was not a new death game. And the thought it was already creeping her out. Next to her is someone in an ogre hoodie and his friend in teal on the other side.
She stayed still, not even daring to move a muscle.
None of this should be happening.
Gem thought Past Life had ended. What sick joke was this? She begged for an answer as her eyes looked around, only being welcomed by many familiar faces that she had sworn had died hours ago.
Then her eyes spot Pearl, and Gem’s world freezes.
--
OR: Gem struggles to cope with Pearl's death, but after being given one more chance at life, Gem promises that she will not fail Pearl again.
This was done for the @soulsmake creation period. I'll be continuing to write for this lovely AU that @quebees and I worked on together, just wanted to post what was made during the event period :3
Speaking of my soulsmake partner, they made amazing art for this AU and I'm so grateful to have been paired with her!
Writing Snippets
Mid - End of the fic:
Joel had been noting down everything that Pirate Queen Lizzie had told him. A silly title, but rather fitting for her considering she was the backbone of the creature smuggling trade. Still, according to her, mermaid scales would be stronger and more vibrant when mixed with the oil from a lantern recently lit and then boiled in sea water; and considering his visit to Grian and Mumbo's had ended with him picking a mermaid's scale off the floor he may as well see just how well this works. Perhaps he could charge double with this information!
So, being as methodical as ever, he followed the instructions given, only it didn't work as he was told. Instead, he watched as the pot he'd boiled the water in grew exceedingly bright, barely moving far enough back to avoid the explosion that occured from killing him. Though he was still pushed back with the force of it, and could hardly see, hear, or breathe.
"..el," Came a voice, familiar and yet he couldn't quite place it.
Siblings: either your best friend or mortal enemy…
And in this case, they’re mortal enemies!
While me and the lovely @ly-the-frog may not have something final to share yet (life has a funny way of getting in the way doesn’t it?), I thought I would share some of the character refs for our main group: Grian, Gem, and Jimmy!
Despite the fact that I based Grian and Gem off of wings of fire dragons, the world is set in a DND based universe!
More characters and such will be revealed later down the line, but for now have this.
Thanks to @soulsmake for running this event again!
Art for mine and @thediggityduck ‘s AU for @soulsmake 2026!
The premise is this: What if after Wild Life, the Watchers decide to intervene and make a small change to history and swap Wild Life!Scott for his Secret Life counterpart. What if WL!Scott fails to stop a certain team up? What if the future comes early?
You can read the prologue and the first chapter (and any future chapters) here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/86144926
