Sperm Whales napping š Asia (2024) "Beneath the Waves"
It's thought the reason they sleep upright is to make it easy to bob up for air.

The wreck of the Eber Ward
Beneath the Mackinac Bridge lies the Straits of Mackinac, a region notorious for its numerous shipwrecks. The Eber Ward was designed and constructed for the Detroit and Lake Superior Line, specializing in the transportation of package and bulk cargo. Following her departure from winter quarters in Chicago, she loaded a cargo of corn in Milwaukee, before embarking on a voyage to Port Huron. Tragically, the Eber Ward collided with a substantial ice chunk while traversing the Straits on April 20th, 1909, ultimately leading to her sinking and the loss of five crew members.

Itās World Ocean Day!!! Go In There
Sound on to hear the water running through pebbles
It appears I reblogged that on the wrong day. Too bad. Itās still time to go in the ocean.
Itās World Ocean Day!!! Go In There
This spectacular squid is the robust clubhook squid, Onykia robusta, one of the largest species of squid in the ocean. This juvenile measured about 60 centimeters (two feet) long, but adults can grow to over three meters (almost 10 feet). š¦š«ā ā Large body size has many benefits, including protection from predators. But growing big is a challenge, particularly for squid. By virtue of their molluscan heritage, squids possess a set of traitsāincluding high energy demand, energetically costly locomotion, and low blood-oxygen-carrying capacityāthat presumably restrict most species to smaller adult body sizes. But clearly, there are exceptions.ā ā The deep sea remains one of Earthās least explored habitats, and extraordinary animals like the robust clubhook squid remind us how much there is still to discover. Questions about how and why some deep-sea species grow to such impressive sizes continue to inspire research, fueling new discoveries about life in the oceanās depths.ā

"Do you ever dream of land?" The whale asks the tuna.
"No." Says the tuna, "Do you?"
"I have never seen it." Says the whale, "but deep in my body, I remember it."
"Why do you care," says the tuna, "if you will never see it."
"There are bones in my body built to walk through the forests and the mountains." Says the whale.
"They will disappear." Says the tuna, "one day, your body will forget the forests and the mountains."
"Maybe I don't want to forget," Says the whale, "The forests were once my home."
"I have seen the forests." Whispers the salmon, almost to itself.
"Tell me what you have seen," says the whale.
"The forests spawned me." Says the salmon. "They sent me to the ocean to grow. When I am fat with the bounty of the ocean, I will bring it home."
"Why would the forests seek the bounty of the oceans?" Asks the whale. "They have bounty of their own."
"You forget," says the salmon, "That the oceans were once their home."
Last year I finally had an excuse to illustrate this simple little Tumblr story I've had bookmarked forever for class.
I hope you like it :]
Cross Sea- Photo taken from Phares des Baleines (Lighthouse of the Whales) on Ćle de RĆ©, by Michel Griffon 2011
Cross sea is an unusual, rare but nevertheless very dangerous wave pattern. It occurs when waves from different directions meet (cross) each other. The overlapping of these wave systems creates a chessboard-like pattern, which on the one hand has an enormous suction and the waves, created by the overlapping, can suddenly become 10 metres and more. This pattern is able to drown swimmers in shallow coastal areas and sink ships in deeper areas.

Here it is, the poster for World Eel Day 2026! It's time again to celebrate eels of all sorts in any way you can!
Oh? "How do I part-eel-cipate?" you ask? Well, from the eel man himself:
"There are lots of ways to get involved with World Eel Day. Your eel inspired activities, photos, resources, art, outcomes, thoughts or messages can be shared online on all social media platforms with the hashtags #WorldEelDay2026 #WorldEelDay
For example, you could organise an eel event , draw or make an eel or write a story or a poem. Remember to tag or collaborate with @eelsuitcase on instagram"
Basically, get cr-eel-ative! (these are not my best work)
