Sometimes I sense the ghost of Bill Watterson about you
Thank you, that's very nice to say about me and very threatening to say about the still living Bill Watterson

A new bylaw shielding Sussex coast from bottom trawling means nearly a third of Sussex's inshore waters are now protected
Bottom trawling has been banned in an area off the Sussex Coast supporting rare chalk reef and sandstone reef ecosystems. With this new law, nearly 30% of inshore waters around Sussex are protected from trawling.
Scientists recorded more than 1,500 species critical to the marine ecosystem, which they say emphasises the need for marine protections
In other positive UK ocean news, a recent study found Scottish seabed ecosystems can see a dramatic rebound after receiving trawling protections. After a decade of protection, these areas had three times as much marine live and twice as many species present. Intact and undisturbed seabed ecosystems can also function as carbon sinks.
This new evidence that protections do work, and potentially faster than expected, can hopefully pave the way for further trawling bans.

Every time I read/watch something about water usage in the American west it's like 'this is obviously, mechanically, directly and observably unsustainable and already getting bad. Sadly due to an understanding hashed out over whiskey and cigars in 1920 there is simply no alternative to using 110% of the Colorado river and also approximately all of the continent's groundwater growing alfalfa and pistachios, so we're basically just fucked.'
250 years and most native tribal groups continue to not be federally recognized. Embarrassing!
Hey so a small thing that literally everyone who sees this is capable of is correcting any βused toβ statements about native people in this country.
βNative people used to live in this National Parkβ No. They still do.
βNative people used to tell these stories-β No. They still do.
βNative people used to use this plant as a natural remedy-β No. They still do.
Better yet, familiarize yourself with the tribes local to you. Odds are, they do not yet have federal recognition. You can still read the stories they have to share, you can share their ongoing battle for recognition with others, you can sign petitions and spread the word to others to do so as well. But do something.
You can envision a good future for the place which is currently the United States without deciding that there has been Something Absolvingly Good about the US this whole time
Every liberal is like, "We can be saved, we just need to do America according to American Ideals this time!" And then "American Ideals" are a set of pretty basic rules they just made up, that could apply to any country. Come on. You can't "no true Scotsman" your way into saying the US is Good and every Bad thing it has done is Against The Ideals.
There's a lot of comfort to me in James Baldwin's specific phrasing, "we can make America what America must become." You don't need a single higher moral concept imposed on you from the outside. You just need to decide to make a change towards what you see as a better world. It just feels scary because when you aren't wielding the righteous hammer of what "America" SHOULD be, you start realising that most of your problems aren't actually nails.
It also raises the question: what must it become? What future do we fight for? Tearing down corrupt systems only gets you so far. The people and the land we live on will always persist and become something, so what "something" will it be?

Very funny how there's unethical job options for like every degree. Welcome back to the job market, You Will Be Tested
Engineers getting into weapons manufacturing is just the tip of the iceberg. Almost every non-biological scientist, from chemistry to geology, has applications in the oil industry. Biologists can work at dubious private zoos, or straight for Monsanto! Historians can get awesome jobs at auction houses selling stolen artifacts! English degrees aren't good for much, but they can be good for editing in a low-level billionaire's half-assed think tank! The CIA wants linguists! The IDF wants marketing experts! You CAN get a job, at the cost of your morals!

This textile is TWO THOUSAND YEARS OLD.
It looks like it could have been made last year. It is SO bright and whole. I am staggered.
