For my own sanity i will hc that its not the Keyblade that is broken, but the Keychain, and that it can be repaired, just as it can be strengthened, and is also linked to your heart (hence why Sora’s resets when he gets reset). So when Riku broke Way to Dawn, he could have repaired it, but decided to leave it behind. He no longer needs it, and by leaving it on the Realm of Darkness, maybe it will help someone else one day line it helped him. Someone’s Way To Dawn.

Symbolism wise, its kinda funny that the one that was stuck in the realm of darkness for years on end was Aqua, who is obviously water. Not very relevant, since the theory is mostly symbolism based and not story driven, but still ironic
