objectively correct & incontrovertibly true headcanons for matchablossom while kojiro is in italy for culinary school (per a convo with my love, @the-interdimensional-help-line)
- okay so they're not yet dating when kojiro heads off to italy, but they're definitely both in love. cue a tense goodbye at the airport with lots left unsaid & strained silences & awkward humor to try to cut the tension
- kaoru in particular is super worried about them drifting apart while kojiro is abroad, so they schedule a weekly video call to stay in touch
- this proves unnecessary, because they both end up calling each other more or less daily. they don't even bother with a "hey, how are you? is this a good time?" kaoru will answer & kojiro will just immediately be like "okay you know my pastry professor? well you will not BELIEVE what she did in class today" & vice versa
- this sometimes causes problems when one of them forgets about the existence of time zones
- is it cliché to headcanon a character in an ldr looking up at the moon & thinking "wow, this is the same moon they see at night"? yes. do i care? no. they both do it far more than they're willing to admit
- kojiro gets a frantic text from kaoru right in the middle of a final exam practical portion. turns out kaoru's having a panic attack, so kojiro doesn't even hesitate. he's just like "sorry, i have to make a phone call. it's a family emergency" (bc what is kaoru if not family??) & books it out of the room
- he gets to retake the exam & ends up passing, but in the moment, that was the least of his concerns
- when he finally comes home to japan, they have the totally overdramatic airport reunion where kaoru throws himself into kojiro's arms & kojiro scoops him up & they're thisclose to kissing before kojiro breaks the tension with a super awkward "god, you've gotten even bonier since i last saw you. can't function without me here to cook for you, huh??" before setting him back down, blushing furiously
- they pine for at least a few more years after that, sorry folks
