Bounding through the front door, Jon tossed his backpack to the side before poking his head in the kitchen where he found preparations for dinner starting. “Hey Dad? What are the odds you’ll let me clear out the hay loft in the barn and make it a hangout space?”

Slowly, Clark circled around the kitchen island, stepping closer to his son. “I know how hard this has been for you. All of it. Your whole life changed at once and you haven’t really… found your footing. And I understand feeling helpless. I know it might not seem like it… but I do.”

He sighed softly. “We can find ways for you to be more involved, and… if you’re feeling unsafe, I’m sure your mom or your grandfather can show you some self-defense.” Of course that wouldn’t help with bullets, but it was better then nothing. “But sometimes there really is nothing you can do. It happens to all of us. And that’s the hardest thing to accept.”

he sniffled softly, the back of his hand rubbing his nose. “but you’re superman. you can do pretty much anything. i think our experiences with feeling helpless are a lot different, dad.” jon couldn’t imagine a world in which his dad was left feeling helpless, with his powers, he was practically invincible.

slowly coming back after an extended hiatus, things will most likely be very slow, so please be respectful.

sorry i’ve been MIA for god knows how long. i’ve had some really tough mental and physical health struggles that have just taken my attention when i’m not trudging through work. i miss you all dearly, and while i don’t have the energy to write with formatting & icons here, i’ve been writing over on discord. if anyone is interested in writing or simply talking, you can find me over there.

Clark: everything will be--

Clark looked up from chopping veggies as Jon came in, slowly putting down the knife as he saw how somber his son looked. At the apology, he sighed softly. “…it’s okay. I know you were just trying to help. But you have got to be more careful. You were right – I barely got here in time.” The thought kept running through his head, reminding him that he’d been seconds away from losing his child.

“Why did you go back in without her? What was so important you felt you couldn’t wait?” He wasn’t upset, just genuinely curious to know.

jon cleared his throat in an attempt to push the emotions down as he leaned against the doorframe. those moments were on a slow motion loop in his mind, the fear overwhelming as he felt the seconds tick by. that is, until he felt his dad shield him from the bullets that were meant for him. shaking his head, he brought himself back to reality as clark posed the question jon had been avoiding.

despite not voicing it aloud, jon was struggling. he wasn’t one to admit it, especially when his brother was finally gaining more and more confidence with each day they were in smallville. not only was was he feeling left out for one of the few times in his life, he was also trying to process the emotions that came with seeing a different version of his mom be killed at the hand of a darker version of his dad from another earth, and the trauma that came with being inches away from his demise.
