Leon the Orphan
Fantasy
There was once a small family of Heliades living on an island in the middle of a lake in the beautiful country of Catavuelas. But the family fled persecution after a terrible misunderstanding. León was an infant at the time and he and his grandmother were the sole survivors.
They arrived in the independent city state of Onades de Plata, considered a ‘safe haven’ city from the rampant non-human slavery within the Dorean Continent.
León doesn’t know his history because his grandmother left him at an orphanage and disappeared shortly after.
Like the other kids living there, León grew up without much support or guidance. Everything they learned, they got from each other and the mistakes they made running in the streets. León became the bossy kid, leading the others around and protecting them from adults who disrespected them. But this also meant he got marked as a troublemaker and received the brunt of people’s judgements.
León and his best friend, Sparrow, also picked pockets and ran roofs. If the kids were eating that night, it was usually because of their hard work. But it meant neither of them learned how to read or write.
When León was sixteen, he was given the position as the first nymph on the city guard. But it wasn’t enough to get the title and uniform. His coworkers were split into those who babied him because he was a nymph and they are supposed to be pretty and sweet; and the cowards who knew nymphs could withstand injuries that would have been fatal to humans, so sent him into deadly situations without support.
He was on track to proving all those assholes wrong when he started investigating a serial killer picking off nonhumans in the slums. He was captured by the killer and injected with poison that turned him mortal. He was rescued after by Sparrow and her mentor, Rowin. But the damage was done. León had been given a life expectancy of about forty years (which is nothing compared to a nymph’s usual immortality.)
He returned to work, but shortly after that Sparrow was murdered while abroad on monster hunting work. From then on, León is on a hunt for her killers.
