Who Does God Use?
Many Latter-day Saints and others have denounced Donald Trump and/or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who voted for Donald Trump as President of The United States of America. They generally cite Trumpās past and legal troubles as to why he doesnāt deserve support.
Even if you donāt think the legal system was weaponized against him, applying a moral code to him he doesnāt apply to himself is unjust as a member of the Church: The Book of Mormon has many examples of leaders who were good leaders, but not righteous personally. ā[Morianton] did do justice unto the people, but not unto himself because of his many whoredoms; wherefore he was cut off from the presence of the Lord.ā
Ultimately, the false equivalence used to declare one party better than another due to the latterās failings can lead us to destruction just as easily as willfully choosing evil. Condemning each other without civil discourse doesnāt help.
A BYU professor did just that recently in a very impersonal and general way. He and likeminded others didnāt like the impersonal responses to his statement. Instead of having discussion to learn, many like Professor Cardon make up their minds, and hide behind unrighteous judgment.
This is especially surprising considering the keystone of our religion has many examples of God using sinful, or at least imperfect, humans to do His work. The full breadth of Godās words must be considered; we canāt use one scripture to support politically-fueled hate. Why would God want to highlight the reign of kings in relation to their righteousness? He knew weād have to choose between leaders not aligned with our moral values. He knew the examples of Omni, Shule, Morianton, and others would help.
God can use anyone in any capacity. He has shown that repeatedly. I donāt claim President Trump is chosen by God, only that God has a work to do, and heāll get it done any way He can.

I took my sons out to hunt for their first elk last month. I had taken Lincoln out last year on one of my hunts, where we slept in bivy bags under the stars; great memory. I wasn't interested in hunting for myself this year. They took hunter education, and wanted to go out this year. Deer population is still suffering after the brutal winter two years ago, so I opted to just get them elk tags.
We went east of Dry Creek Lake opening morning, which isn't a popular spot, but I know elk had been seen back there. The abnormally warm weather made me think the elk would be at around 10k feet. We saw nothing, but we did hear a cougar when hiking out, which made getting back to the truck interesting.
That evening, we went to upper Willow Creek, which was serene, with promising signs. I had heard elk were spotted near lower Willow. We, again, didn't see any elk, but we heard a group shoot a few times close by. They were still out after dark when we came out, so they must've had luck.
A few days later, after hearing quite a few people were successful down south, we did some road hunting near Hobble Creek in the morning. That evening, we went to Cottonwood Creek, where we saw two moose, and a lone cow elk. No luck that evening, but seeing some game was at least a bit uplifting.
We hooked up with my uncle last week, and he found a herd of elk near his home in Bedford: they were bedded down in a field at sunrise. We had a good opportunity to get a shot, but a couple of high school kids drove up, started talking to us, and spooked them. We got one shot off, which was a miss, and we just had to watch the elk circle around, between houses. They finally stopped in a field close by, but it was property we were told we couldn't hunt on. That didn't stop the high schoolers and others from shooting; very frustrating.
As we called it quits for the morning, we saw a group of cows with a couple bulls up in the mountains to the east. Jack wanted to get back to school, but Lincoln and I came back that afternoon, to hike up into the bowl where we saw the elk; they had remained up there through the day.
The hike was brutal: steep terrain with a layer of snow which made it slick. It took us 90 minutes to go half the distance we wanted to, forcing us to stop short, and hope the elk would come down the draw to us at sunset. We watched them for over an hour, with no sign they'd move to us.
Just before dusk, Lincoln saw a lone bull at the top of the knob across the way, on the opposite ridge. We watched as he came closer, and Lincoln tried to get in position to shoot up to the ridge. Unfortunately, the bull moved over the ridge to the north.
Another group of two spikes and some cows came along, and took roughly the same path. We were running out of light, and it was getting very cold, so we opted not to wait to see if they'd come back, and started the rough trip back down; mostly sliding down the mountainside. Even though we haven't had any luck this season, it has been a lot of fun.

I regularly witness friends and family that disavow their faith, and their faith-based ties in some cases. I understand why many do this. I have spent the last two years struggling to exist as an older undergraduate student; having witnessed many personal miracles, I still doubt regularly. The world is chaotic and confusing. That includes the recent and former history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. āTruthā abounds. Alternating perspectives defines many peoplesā reality, and thereās no way to prove universal truth beyond the sciences (even then, itās often not possible). All of those things have played a part in my own efforts to dissuade myself from believing in my faith. I have doubted my own ability to trust what I feel and think. I have doubted my memories, even when recorded in journals.Ā
While I understand why people I love and respect abandon their faith, I donāt understand what keeps them going. This is the thing that perpetuates my exploration of my faith: life without afterlife is hopeless, and life without knowing what the afterlife is creates lifelong anxiety. If I say there is no God, that I die and am nothing, why live? If I say that Godās there, but I donāt know Him or His plan, I have no basis for my life and no way of knowing what awaits me after death. I could not live in either one of these scenarios. I understand people do. I donāt discount their experience. I donāt understand it. So, I choose to believe, because I know of no other way to exist. I think we all choose what to believe, regardless of truth. Indeed, the Book of Mormon suggests this is expected:
āBut behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my wordsā (Alma 32:27).
I understand why people choose to believe their past faith was incorrect, misplaced, or misunderstood. I have no negative judgment toward them, and hope those I know that have followed other paths donāt abandon our relationships. I hope they wonāt say all was lost in their season of belief and throw off their history as a sick man discarding a hospital gown.Ā
Iāve had doctors, even dentists, insist I be on blood pressure medication even though my reading was around 130/85, and they didnāt ask about caffeine, diet, or lifestyle at all. Itās infuriating. Iāve only had one good doctor take time to treat causes rather than symptoms.
