You know why you probably never saw these pictures during your space units in high school? It's because our educations system would be forced to admit the commies did some cool fucking shit.

The Venera program had a bunch that just died on entry of the atmosphere because trying to figure out how to make something survive Venus in the 1960s was not easy. Venera 7 was the first to successfully hit the ground intact and send data back. Venera 4, 5, and 6 transmitted data from the atmosphere, and Venera 3 slammed into the planet like a space rock. Venera 1 and 2 failed in space. After the first seven, they had a couple hours worth of readings total. Venera 7 had a very rough landing, and died sooner than expected. Venera 8 had a good landing, and sent back an hour of data compared to the under-30-minutes of Venera 7.

Last month I caught Covid, and right at the start of my symptoms I saw this post. For the next 8ish days, I was HAUNTED by this song. It played on a loop in my head for hours. I would wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat singing “…mixed with Zach Galifianakis” as it bounced around in my virus-addled brain. It was literally inescapable.
